Dr. Pairat, although very good, cannot diagnose glaucoma.
Yet 3 years ago Dr Pairat diagnosed glaucoma in one of my husband's eye and the retina imaging was very clear[/quote]OK. Happy to be corrected. Perhaps I should rather say cannot always definitively diagnose glaucoma.

Edit -- don't know why the quote came out like this.

Thats a good point as is your very good point about specialist equipment. Back in October I was diagnosed as having conjunctavitis by Dr.P. The problem being that it had spread to my cornea and after the conjunctavitis had cleared up, it had left an ongoing problem with my cornea, which was affecting my vision.

So, I was referrred to see a cornea specialist in Bkk, as seemingly, there are none in Hua Hin. Off I went with a letter from Dr.P as it needed specialist equipment to identify what exactly the problem was (top layer of cornea had become separated from the one below). The Doctor in Bkk sent a reply to Dr.P what the diagnosis was. First, I was surprised that my tear was tested, I was told that was normal. And then I sat in front of this machine, which span around and around in front of me, as it apparantly produced a 3D image of the cornea.

Dr. P simply explained that it was impossible for a practiotoner such as he, to pay for such equipment.

Anyway, after a few ups and downs and talk of laser surgery, cornea replacement via a donor and stem cell surgery, the first two of which Dr.P had mentioned when he first referred me, things are now looking up.

Donor and stem cell surgery - wow! Has any of the talk solidified into actual or scheduled treatment yet? Even laser which should be easier to arrange than cornea replacement?

The stem cell surgery is a different issue. And I have a donor for that - me! From the other eye. That has been put on the back burner as the eye has improved. but there is a 'dead' area of the eye. Interestingly for that, you have to leave the private sector for the state sector. Still in Bkk though.

Upon my initial consultation with the cornea specialist, it was potential laser surgery, depending to how the eye responded to 'regular' treatment. Unforunately, subsequent to that, I got conjunctavitis again, then a secondry problem with the eye. At that stage, she was thinking if the worse came to the worse, laser surgery probably wouldn't help. However, since I started recovering from those 'secondary' ailments, as I was before they appeared, the prognosis is improving. I go back in another couple of weeks and see how things are then.

The information posted in this thread is extremely useful and valuable

So just a thought for the future for people searching this informative thread

It's just the title that's now looking a little misleading as it's moved well on from 'eye tests' as such

How about The Eye Thread(Tests, Clinics, Procedures etc...)??

Is this something you have had to pay for yourself or is it covered by insurance - sounds expensive!!

No insurance, as the timescale for this kicked in eons ago. With an eye full of ulcers that saw me off work for two months.

So far, the cost has been very reasonable. The most I have paid was 4300, at the first consultation with the cornea specialist, which included an eye test, in effect, me looking at a computer screen from about a metre away, then seeing the Doctor, then the tear test, then the 3D image (I think) of the cornea on their crazy spinning machine, back to the Doc again, then prescription. Only one new item needed, as others I already had and know are cheaper than via a hospital. Most visits have cost circa 1200. That's at Rutnin eye hospital, in Asoke, Bangkok.

I should add that they always ask if I need an insurance cert.

That’s a lot more reasonable than I had expected - obviously your eyes are the most important of all our senses and deserve the best treatment possible + I hope they continue to give you the same excellent treatment.
