Do you honestly believe the intention of these cameras is to reduce death tolls on Thai roads? They are nothing more than a revenue collection system, which should see most of the cash go to the correct Gov't department, rather into an officer's back packet.
Exactly, I'm all in favour of making the roads safer here but this is just extra revenue generation for the cops to spend on more cameras, shiny new pickups to be parked in the shade, and Regency for their karaoke parties.
A few hundred baht isn't going to deter the hiso Na-Yingyangs in their 2 million baht SUVs from doing 160kph, or Sombats in their battered, durian-laden Nissans from doing 45kph in the same lane, or Nok from pulling a u-turn into oncoming traffic on her Honda Wave without looking.

Totally agree Big Boy, it is a money making issue, but my point is about visibility, they will always look at ways to get more money in anyway even if in patrol cars, but if it stops people speeding then all well and good. The crux of the whole road safety problem, as it is here, is a selfishness to other road users and I will be fine god/buda is watching over me.
No pleasing some folk it seems. You moan when they do cock all and moan when they get off their collective arses and actually do some form of pro active policing.

I think that most of us would accept honest and consistent application of the traffic rules, not just in fits and starts or as the officer interprets. I have no problem with speed cameras but would love to see that backed up by routine patrols out on the streets, rather than just providing escort duties to some VIP on their way to/from Bangkok!!
But are they getting off their arses? Most of these cameras will be installed by a 3rd party, and they stay in their air-conditioned rooms as the cash flows in. Get out there and move around. That poor guy and his cronies, with a mobile camera, probably did their entire shift (joelle says most days) for a week standing in that same shady spot.
Try walking down the road booking everybody incorrectly parked - it would be a start. God forbid, but why not chase a few helmetless motorcycle riders instead of waiting somewhere else shady for the 'criminals to come to them? Surely, this technology should be releasing more of them to terrorise us into obeying the law on the streets.
/\ The current discussion is about two cops carrying out mobile laser camera speed checks on a stretch of road that has been subject to a few fatal RTA's in recent years. Fixed speed cameras are a different matter.
Would you have these cops stand out in in the full glare of the sun for hours? You've never operated a laser camera have you?

No, anything more than point and shoot is too complex for me.
The discussion is 2 cops + a bunch of their mates on most days.
I fully support proactive policing. I honestly don't think there is enough of it. To call this proactive, they need to move occasionally at least. If they are there most days, they could have installed a fixed camera, releasing the officers to do something more procactive.
Unless you have sat and observed these cops you can't make assumptions about their operating procedures or location changes. You can't always rely on the good nature of other posters to tell us where and when. That's the idea of mobile speed detection devices.

/\ The point is, neither you or anyone else has observed these cops for any considerable time. For all you or I know they very well may move around. Doubtful but I couldn't comment. Do you pass by that particular spot every day?

The last thing I'm worried about when driving in Hua Hin is speeding tickets, I seem to spend the whole time either in traffic congestion or behind sidecar somtam stands, grannies on scooters, trucks blaring advertising, overloaded construction vehicles, cars slowing down for potholes and any other traffic doing about 20kmh!
What about that camera halfway down the hill from the elephant village? Is it ever active?
It is hard to go slow down that hill with every man and his dog right up your arse. What is the speed limit past that camera? I don't know. I've never detected a radar reading yet, but that doesn't mean it doesn't get switched on from time to time.

I've never had a ticket but I don't go that way much, generally I use soi 88 to get into town.
