We have National PLowing day followed by the National Drink Driving weekend, where Thailand gets another shot at most road deaths in the world and the opportunity to reduce it's burgeoning population.

French cyclist killed by car in Ayutthaya
A young French woman was killed when a car hit her bicycle at an intersection in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district on Wednesday night.

The fatal crash occurred on Rojana Road at Khlong Makhamriang intersection in tambon Prathuchai, said Pol Capt Wirunkit Tantrakul, deputy investigation chief at Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. It was reported to police about 9pm.

Emergency services called to the scene said the French tourist, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was found lying face down on the road. She was badly injured and bleeding heavily. She was given first aid and then rushed to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

A damaged bicycle was found on the road. Not far from it was a Toyota Altis car with Ayutthaya licence plates, its bumper damaged on the left side and the windshield broken, Thai media reported.

Car driver Sathapana Khumsupha, 42, told police he was driving home from work. As he approached the intersection the traffic light turned from red to green, so he continued on. Two people on bicycles crossed from his left to the road divider. He braked but could not stop in time and hit one of them, Mr Sathapana said.

...and if I'm correct with what I'm seeing, the foreigner was the one who correctly stopped at the lights and got smashed into?

Never, I repeat, never stop at a traffic light. Far too dangerous.

That particular crossing is even more dangerous for pedestrians, possibly the worst on Phetkasem Road in Hua Hin.

It's abused by many and that includes the police themselves. I've stopped in the middle lane and more than once I've seen a police car continue in the outside lane almost running into a pedestrian on one occasion.
Not just police of course. Even those that stop will move off when the crossing is believed to be clear rather than wait for a green light.

Brother injured after car drives into path of train at unmanned crossing in Chumphon

A teenage girl was killed and her 19-year-old brother injured when their car was hit by a train at an unmanned railway crossing in Lang Suan district of Chumphon province on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred in tambon Ban Khuan, said Pol Capt Thanakit Longsawat, an investigation officer at the Lang Suan police station, who was alerted around 9.45am.

Police who arrived on the scene found a badly damaged Honda CR-V with Chumphon licence plates near the railway track. Two people were injured and rushed to a hospital but one was later pronounced dead.

The dead victim was identified as Piyamat Nilsuk, 16, and the injured driver was her elder brother Payungsak Nilsuk, 19, Thai media reported.

According to a preliminary police investigation, a local train on the Chumphon-Hat Yai route had left the Lang Suan railway station a few minutes before the crash occurred. As it approached the crossing, the train driver saw the car driving toward the crossing. He sounded the horn and tried to apply the brakes but was unable to stop in time to avoid the car as it drove across the track. The crossing had no barriers, but there was a train crossing signpost.

The force of the crash caused the car to overturn several times before it landed at the side of the track. The train was not damaged and later continued the trip.

Mr Payungsak was reportedly driving his sister to take a tutorial course at the time of the accident. Police plan to question him later but said he was still in a shock over the loss of his sister.

Protected/unprotected, it makes little difference in Thailand.

Just like red traffic lights, railway crossing barriers don't apply to many Thais and Farangs alike. Just sit at the Soi94 crossing when the barrier drops.

One of my favourite pastimes when here on holiday years ago was sitting in the little restaurant by the Soi88 crossing when a train was coming. The barrier was like a cloth tape that dropped vertically. It used to be great watching the motorcyclists limboing under the tape. They had to concentrate so hard on the tape, they simply couldn't have been watching the train.

Many of the crossings north of HH are unprotected since work was started on the 'double rail'.

Talking of the new rail track being laid, I don’t know if it’s the same everywhere but the fence they’ve put up near where our house is can’t be any more than about 4 ft high. If that’s the final height then anybody wanting to get over it will have no problem!!

Well there's nothing really new regarding safety. Now there are two lines rather than one. Fencing wasn't an issue with a single line so shouldn't be an issue with dual lines.
