Day 4: 80 deaths, 709 injuries

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... 9-injuries

Eighty people were killed and 709 injured in road accidents nationwide on Friday, bringing the total over the past four days of a road safety campaign to 267 deaths and 2,362 injuries.

A total of 713 accidents were reported on the first day of 2021, according to the Road Safety Directing Centre under the supervision of the Interior Ministry.

Authorities said they had stepped up measures to deal with a rise in traffic during the New Year holiday. More checkpoints were set up to check drivers for alcohol and also a fever in the wake of re-emerging Covid-19.

The road safety campaign was renamed to “New Normal, Drive Safely, No accidents” from “Seven Dangerous Days” used over the past several years to raise awareness of both drivers and passengers for road safety and coronavirus.

Drink driving continued to be the major cause of the accidents (43%) on Friday, followed by speeding (35.2%).

Like in previous days, the vehicle type most prone to accidents was motorcycles (81.7%).

Most crashes occurred on straight roads (66%), local roads (40.4%) and highways (34.2%). The most dangerous time of day was 1am to 4am, according to the centre.

The age group suffered from the most injuries and deaths was those aged 50 or more (21.7%)

A total of 1,908 checkpoints were set up, manned by 61,428 officials.

Around 460,000 vehicles were stopped and 98,530 people were charged with not wearing helmets (26,682) and not having driving licences (25,111).

The province reporting the most accidents and injuries on Friday was Songkhla (28 and 30 respectively) while Bangkok and Chiang Rai saw the most deaths (five each).

Over the past four days, 11 provinces reported no deaths from road accidents.

Over four days, the provinces with the most accumulative accidents were Chiang Mai and Songkhla (87 each). Nakhon Ratchasima reported the most deaths (16) while Chiang Mai also saw the most accumulative injuries (92).

That middle stat is quite revealing, 67.10% of crashes have occurred on straight roads with presumably good visibility.

I notice that drinking and speeding have been cited as major causes so you have to wonder, when noting the above, what the figure for 'len torrasup' while driving is.

Day 5: 49 deaths, 379 injuries

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... 9-injuries

Forty-nine people were killed and 379 injured in road accidents on Saturday, bringing the total over the past five days of a road safety campaign to 316 deaths and 2,741 injuries.

The Road Safety Directing Centre said on Sunday 49 people were killed and 379 injured on Thailand's roads on Saturday as the New Year holidays came close to an end.

Nakhon Ratchasima, the gateway to other northeastern provinces, led the death toll at 16 and Chiang Mai topped both the number of accidents at 97 and the tally of injured at 99.

Motorcycles dominated the type of vehicles involved in accidents -- at 82% -- followed by pickup trucks at almost 6% and cars at 3%. Drink-driving was still the main cause of the accidents at 35%, slightly more than driving over the speed limit at 33%.

About one-fourth of the accidents occurred during the four-hour span starting at 4pm.

The country ends the New Year celebrations on Monday as revellers based in Bangkok return from other provinces.

So far, this year's death toll figures are worse than last - and that's with a lockdown, restrictions, failing economy, and theoretically less traffic.

Day 6: 40 deaths, 333 injuries

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... 3-injuries

The road death toll during the New Year holidays fell 28.6% year-on-year to 40 on Sunday, but the cumulative number over the past six days was still 9.1% higher than last year’s levels.

Official data showed 325 accidents took place nationwide on Sunday, the sixth of the seven-day road safety campaign. In addition to the 40 deaths, 333 people were injured, the Road Safety Directing Center told a briefing on Monday. (see chart)

Speeding became the major cause of accidents, at 35.7%, outpacing drink driving (24.3%) for the first time during the campaign.

Motorcycles continued to be the type of vehicles involved in most accidents, accounting for 83%, followed by pickup trucks (6.3%). Failing to wear helmets was identified as the riskiest behaviour (54.4%), followed by drink driving (16.6%).

By province, Chiang Mai led in all three categories, with the highest numbers of deaths (5), crashes (14) and injuries (14). Kanchanaburi also saw the most injuries, at 14.

Over the past six days of the campaign, 3,072 accidents took place, killing 358 people and hurting 3,073 others.

Nine provinces saw no deaths. Chiang Mai saw the most accidents (111) and injuries (113). Chiang Rai and Nakhon Ratchasima logged the most fatalities, at 16 each.

Half a million people were prosecuted for breaking traffic laws over the past six days, down from 1.2 million in the same period of last year’s campaign.

As people continued to travel on Monday, authorities said they had focused on monitoring speeding and safety-belt use, as well as testing drivers for alcohol.

Accident-prone sections on highways to the capital were also improved, with traffic cones and blinking lights installed and some U-turn spots closed.

I must say, inter provincial travel restrictions have significantly reduced traffic passing through Hua Hin today.

Almost 400 killed during holiday travel

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... day-travel

Almost 400 died in about 3,300 road accidents nationwide during the seven-day New Year road safety campaign this year, up 5% from the same period last year.

A total of 392 people were killed and 3,326 others were injured in 3,333 accidents over the past seven days, the Road Safety Directing Center reported on Tuesday.

Seven provinces — Nakhon Nayok, Narathiwat, Nan, Mae Hong Son, Ranong, Amnat Charoen and Uttaradit — reported no deaths.

Throughout the campaign, Chiang Mai logged the most accidents and injuries (115 and 117 respectively) while Chiang Rai saw the most deaths (18).

Speeding was the major cause of accidents (33.6%), followed closely by drink-driving (33.1%).

The riskiest behaviours were not wearing helmets (59.3%) and drink-driving (25.1%).

Motorcycles were involved in the most accidents (82.5%), followed by pickup-trucks (6.2%).

Most accidents occurred on straight roads (65.8%) and during 4-8pm (27.4%).

On Monday, the last day of the campaign, 265 accidents took place, resulting in 22 deaths and 271 injuries.

Deputy Interior Minister Nipon Boonyamanee told a briefing on Tuesday the ministry had instructed provincial authorities and volunteers to plan more preventive measures based on the new data to minimise the major causes such as drink-driving and failure to wear helmets.
