Visa run this this week?

Post by Chas »

Ok We have friends from the UK who need a visa extension.

They need to do it within the next few days from Hua Hin.

Is anyone still doing visa runs?
If anyone IS, how do they contact you (them) to book?

This is rather urgent.
Thanks

Chas,

Sorry I moved you to "White Board" as that's where visa run threads are. Am just going to pm you with a couple of options.

Hiya

They can do it the interesting way as I have done quite a few times and that is by bike on their own. Really not as bad as it may sound and can really be fun.

Another option is:-

Catch a bus near the railway crossing in Hua hin down to Ranong - about 240 baht. Taxi to immigration to peir is 60 baht and boat accross 50 baht.

The same cost back and takes a day to complete.

Just depends on how much you want to go through or how much you're willing to pay.

I have done it a few times on my honda wave and had a great time including having spent a night or two in Myanmar.

Good luck
Shane

visa run

Post by Hervelon »

although it is useful to know you can get your visa extended there...but can anyone tell me if it is a difficult process to enter Burma from Hua Hin and what is the quickest access point from HH. How long is the visa extension you get with a UK passport?
Is Myanmar one of the nicest spot in Burma, what sould i see...? any other relevant tip would be appreciated...
Thanks

Keep calling the country Burma, don't ever stop even if some twit tells you it is not PC anymore. Just stare at them and growl. Myanmar is the new name for Burma as bestowed by the military ruling junta some 20 years ago. Yes, even someday Ho Chi Minh City will be Saigon again. I don't know what the deal was with Bombay and Calcutta? Rather recent and perhaps just some politico still itching at all things British? At least the Cambodians discarded Capuchia(sp).....good for them.

The HH locals should answer the visa/Ranong City questions. Pete

First off, you're not getting a visa extension there - although it can be done at Ranong imm, HH's much easier obviously. You're making a visa run, either getting a new 30 day visa exemption waiver/stamp, getting another 60 days on a multi-entry Tourist visa, or another 90 days if on a multi-entry Non O visa.
It's dead easy to enter Burma at Victoria Point from Ranong. You need 10 US dollars to get in and get a 13 day stamp. Although I've not stayed overnight, I understand that it's not exactly exciting. I'll have to do it sometime. Most places close early, you're not supposed to leave the town (Burmese imm keep your passport) and there always seems to be endless hassle from locals wanting to sell you cheap booze, cigarettes and viagra.
BTW also, Myanmar is Burma. It's the new name for the country.
In addition to the options on getting there mentioned above, another way, that I enjoy, is getting a train from HH to Chumpon (5 hours sitting in the restaurant car over a few beers) and then staying the night. I know a decent hotel in central Chumpon, with air con etc etc etc for 450 Baht a night. There are some half decent bars with pub grub in town and you can catch a shared minibus to Ranong the next morning. Do the visa run and get a bus back to HH that afternoon. At least the journey is split up a bit.

And maybe one day we can all visit Siam again.

You're not a lone voice in the wilderness, BB. I've talked to many Thai's over the years who want the same thing, strongly. The willpower is there to strengthen their indentity and the thought is that what you suggest is a strong and bold statement, and appropriate. The change from Siam to Thailand was done during the days of no protest, or even the thought thereof. As the circle of life turns turns, lets see what happens. Pete

I have always preferred the name Siam over Thailand, it sort of sounds more exotic. All the Thais I have talked to have agreed without exception....

I agree about the exotic sound but prefer the name Thai more than I would Siamese when referring to the people.

Must be, as even the Thais only say "Krungthep". :D

The last poll I took, which was admittedly about 10 years ago, only 1 out of 8 Thai friends could say all that. Don't know if they even teach it in school anymore? Pete

Pete, I may be wrong but I thought Thais were taught it in song, like we are the Alphabet.

My poll had vastly different figures to yours. 50-50 in fact.

My friends Girlfriend can say it, mine wont even entertain me.

My poll wasn't exactly scientific. In fact I think it was 6 beer bar girls and my ex Thai brother-in-law and his girlfriend. My BIL is the only one who could say it...not a hard guess.....LOL. Pete
