Fatal collision strews bodies, bags, fish over road

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... -over-road

NAKHON PATHOM - Two men were killed and 11 other people hurt when a pickup truck carrying migrant workers collided with another pickup loaded with fish in Muang district before dawn on Thursday.

The fatal crash occurred around 4.30am at Nong Khayang intersection on Yingpao Road in tambon Sanam Chan, said Pol Capt Yutthaphum Porsawat, a deputy chief investigator for Muang district.

The bodies of two Myanmar men were lying  on the road near a wrecked black Toyota Vigo pickup truck with Nakhon Pathom licence plates when police and rescue workers arrived at the scene. Bags and other belongings were scattered over the road.

Not far from the wreckage, a silver Vigo pickup with Nakhon Pathom licence plates had plunged into the roadside canal. Its cargo, about one tonne of tilapia fish, was scattered over the road.

Eleven people from the two vehicles were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals, Thai media reported.
Police investigators learned the black pickup, carrying 10 migrant workers, was travelling at high speed when it crashed head-on with the fish-laden truck heading to a downtown market. The traffic lights at the intersection were set to flashing.

Police hoped surveillance camera footage would establish the cause of the crash.

Nok Air jet hit by Thai AirAsia bus

A Thai AirAsia shuttle bus hit a Nok Air plane at Don Mueang airport on Friday, causing damage but no injuries.

The Boeing 737-86J was parked at the apron No.35 at the Bangkok airport when the passenger bus hit its nose and the front left part at 10.55pm, Thai media reported.

Nok Air said in a statement on Saturday it would check whether the damage affected the structure of the plane, which would be suspended from service for repairs.

“In the meantime, some passengers might be affected or experience flight delays due to the change of schedules,” it said.

Thai AirAsia said the collision was an accident and that it was cooperating with the investigation.

3 killed, 13 injured in trailer truck brake failure

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... ke-failure

KHON KAEN -- At least three people were killed and 13 other injured when a trailer truck loaded with rocks lost its brake and ran downhill into a group of concert goers in Ubonrat district on Saturday night, according to media reports.

Pol Lt Col Krong Yodsanga, an Ubonrat police investigator, said the accident occurred at about 8.40pm at an area called Chong Khao Khad where a concert was organised by a group of big bike enthusiasts.

The concert began at about 7pm.  Shortly after 8pm the event was disrupted by heavy rain, which was followed by a power blackout, prompting the organisers to cancel the show.

While the big bikers were leaving the area on their vehicles, the trailer truck laden with rocks, of which the brake malfunctioned, ran downhill and mowed into them.

The truck hit about 30 big bikes and vehicles of Ubonrat police.  Three people were killed and 13 others injured on the spot.  The driver of the trailer truck was also injured.

Police believed there were still some more casualties as many of the concert goers were still missing and the wrecks of some motorcycles were still left underneath the trailer truck that ground to a halt after running into a small hill.  A search was carried out in the night.

Accident kills 4, wounds 2 in Phetchaburi

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... hetchaburi

PHETCHABURI -- A pick-up truck skidded off the road and rammed into a tree on the median strip in Cha-am district early on Sunday, killing four passengers and injuring two others, police said.

Pol Lt Col Chukiat Phetthae, a Cha-am police investigator, said the accident occurred at about 5.20am at kilometre marker No 6 on Cha-am - Pran Buri road.

The four-door Mitsubishi Triton was carrying six people.

Found dead in the vehicle were Subin Thesphan, 31, the driver, his wife Pacharapha Krachang, 35, their six-month-old daughter Natthida and Subin's mother Nathaporn Champeethong, 52.

Two girls -- Wipaporn Krachang, 19, and Nattiya Kaewpan, 13 -- were seriously injured.  They were rushed to Cha-am Hospital and later transferred to Phra Chomklao Hospital in the provincial town.

A police investigation revealed that all six people in the vehicle were relatives, travelling to Phetchaburi from Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.  It was initially believed Subin fell asleep at the wheel.

Driver killed, 17 hurt when bus plunges into canal

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... into-canal (Photo at link)

NAKHON SAWAN - The driver was killed and 17 passengers injured when a Bangkok-bound interprovincial bus ran off the road and into a canal in Banphot Phisai district in the early hours of Tuesday.

The crash occurred between kilometre markers 36-37 on Highway 117, the Nakhon Sawan-Phitsanulok route, around 2.45am, a duty officer at Banphot Phisai police station said.

All the passengers managed to escape the overturned bus before it was flooded.

A total of 17 passengers were injured, 12 of them seriously with broken legs and arms. Rescue workers immediately sent them to two nearby hospitals.

The driver of the bus, who was not identified, died in the crash and his body remained trapped in the wreckage, in murky metre-deep water, as of late Tuesday morning.

Police said the bus was carrying 28 passengers and travelling from Nan to Bangkok. It ran off the road and into the canal.

Yot Wannachon said later that most of the other passengers were sleeping, only to be woken up as the bus started shaking before it plunged into the canal. Some passengers began panicking, but he found the emergency hammer and began smashing open the windows, Thai media reported.

They all managed to get out before the water poured in.

Police suspect the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The investigation was continuing.

I can't barely imagine the thoughts behind the Thai habit of opening a car door into a traffic lane, then putting torso and one foot outside, then looking to the right to see if there is any oncoming traffic. What I understand is 'object fixation', that is, looking at what you're about to collide with instead of looking where to go to avoid it.

Saw a video of such a collision happening five seconds after the door began opening. Bent the door back 180 degrees. Passenger, bike, and rider disappeared from view.

At least 25 wounded in two road accidents
Five were injured in one road accident this morning in Chachoengsao while about 20 more sustained injuries in another accident in Prachin Buri last night, police said.

Pol Capt Sit Pulwong, a police investigator with Muang district police station in Chachoengsao, said the five injured were among about 40 passengers on board a bus used by a chicken slaughterhouse to transport its employees to work.

Worawit Tantiarpha, 24, the driver, admitted he felt asleep behind the wheel before the bus slamned into the back of a ten-wheeled truck at about 6am today on Suwinthawong Road in Muang district.

In the second accident, Pol Capt Thirawat Yiam-on, an investigator with Prachin Buri's Muang district police station, said at least 20 people were injured when a bus carrying workers collided head-on with a pick-up truck on Suwinthawong Road in Si Maha Phot of Prachin Buri at around 9.30pm on Monday.

Just a quick comparison comment. One of the Discovery channels, show about heavy hauling in the UK. Driver was bringing a navy mine sweeper from x to y and the show stressed the driver had a max of 10 hours driving out of 24 per law. He was 4 miles away from destination and stopped dead on the roadside when he hit 10 hours and called a replacement driver (his wife). It didn't appear staged at all but common everyday practice by these drivers to stay within the law.

I don't think any Thai driver or transport company owner here could even comprehend the concept or the reasoning. Totally :alien: :alien: :alien: :banghead: Pete

EDIT: What may be more concerning....is there anyone in the Gov at all who would even think regulations like the above are necessary? Frightening indeed.

I don't want to offend, but I think this thread is a forum version of those gruesome cable TV programs that show shootings, muggings, car crashes, etc. It's like sitting through the Thai driving license video over and over.

Once you've said 'the roads in Thailand are really dangerous and the value people place on lives here are less than you may be used to', there's nothing much to add. It's so horribly sad to read about all these lives lost, but what's the benefit?

Don't shoot me please, only an opinion.

I see it differently. The users of this website are expats and tourists, if we can highlight the dangers of the roads in Thailand by re-publishing road traffic accident reports and making people more aware of how bad things really are on Thai roads it may make them safer drivers while they are here, or at least warn them what they're up against.

15 hurt in crash on Bang Na-Trat highway
A speeding pickup truck overturned on the inbound Bang Na-Trat highway in Bang Na district on Saturday morning after it hit two cars, causing 15 injuries, police said.

Pol Captain Natthasit Thongcharoenporn, deputy inspector of Bang Na police station, said the accident happened at 8.30 am at kilometre marker No 2. The pickup was transporting 12 workers to a construction site when it lost control and grazed two cars before it overturned in the right-hand lane. The pickup driver and 12 workers were severely injured and they were rushed to the Piyamin Hospital. The drivers of the two other cars were slightly injured.

Natthasit said police would check CCTV footage before deciding whether to charge the pickup driver.
