Dual-pricing in Thailand: Is it time to do away with the 'farang tax'?
Re: Dual-pricing in Thailand: Is it time to do away with the 'farang tax'?
LOLOL, grow-up, none of us would be here if they couldn't make money from us. They would as soon kill us and burn our bodies in a big pit.

I have taken kids to the events of the day, first my kids (now too old) and now my grandkids. Never had a problem and the kids usually come away with 'freebies'. The guy who turned you away, Takieb needs his arse kicked. Children's day is for all children as is teacher's day. Not that I liked it but I had to go through the rituals of Teacher's day with kids grovelling on the floor in front of me. Not comfortable with that.

until thousands of farangs of all nationalities refuse to pay and walk away nothing will change.
Re: Dual-pricing in Thailand: Is it time to do away with the 'farang tax'?
The most blatant two price system I have seen was a a big out door venue that had a really impressive elephant show, I don't agree with using these magnificent creatures in this way but the battle dress was amazing, a crocodile show etc etc.
As we approached the payment windows there was a poor handicapped man employed to guide us away from the Thai only window.
My friends Thai wife gave us no guidance or support, she buggered off to the non farang window to buy a ticket for her and her husband , a saving for her but ¥*$k you!
This backfired on her when we went to the elephant battle, we were guded to the center stand which had padded seats and an abundance of fans with spray mist, she, despite her complaint, was denied entry to this area until she upgraded the ticket.

I have exactly the same story. Some years ago we visited Samphran. My wife went off to get her cheap ticket and couldn't help gloating, while myself and visiting friends paid the higher price. As above, myself and my guests were seated on a comfortable stand, centre stage, and my wife couldn't gain entry. 1 - 0 to the farang!

Hi all
This is not exclusive to Thailand, I have experienced it in several countries, both at an official level and not, usually when there is a large disparity between the wealth of the average local and everyone else.
As said before we do have a choice.
Cheers.

Yes even in California there are discounts available to those that live there to certain attractions. Doesn't make it right though!B6PTW wrote:Hi all

Boat operators block sea lanes to Noppharat Thara-Ko Phi Phi national park to demand reduction of entry fee by half
http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/boat-o ... -fee-half/
Operators of long-tail boats and speedboats in Ao Nang bay of Krabi province today sailed some of their 500-600 boats to block the sea routes to the Noppharat Thara-Ko Phi Phi national park to demand the park to lower entry fee to the park by half reasoning that the recent fee increase has resulted in sharp drop in foreign visitors to the park.
The protest has suspended the boat service and stranded over 1,000 foreign tourists at a pier on shore and spoiled their planned trip to the popular islands.
Current entry fee for foreign adult is 400 baht, and 200 baht for child. However for local visitors, entry fee is 40 baht for adult and 39 baht for child.
The boat operators claimed that the high entry fee has affected their businesses as now the number of foreign tourists to the national park has declined significantly, thus financially affecting them.
They said they had in the past petitioned to relevant government agencies to bring down the fee but all attempts were ignored.
They resubmitted their petition to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation’s marine national park management chief Mr Nattapong Ratanaphan this morning.
However they were told that he could not make decision on the fee reduction as it is the regulation announced by the department.
All the operators the gathered on the ground in front of the national park office with their boats still blocking the sea lanes.
The national park chief later called in 300 soldiers to come to keep peace and order.
National park chief Sarayut Tantien, meanwhile, ordered tightened the fee collection practise with instruction that any operator pay half price will be denied entry.
Any operator refusing to pay or pay improperly will be videotaped as evidence to take legal action against them afterwards.

Again, the army are called in. Shouldn't this have been a police matter?Bristolian wrote:The national park chief later called in 300 soldiers to come to keep peace and order.

If everyone's income is falling, the answer is obvious - put the price up...
This is the way

I think they're purposely trying to destroy tourism here. Don't different departments talk to each other?! Pete

BOYCOTT...BOYCOTT....BOYCOTT all double pricing places.
It's right that in many countries double pricing exist but in a reasonable proportion. Here it's 10 times the Thai price.

i don't go anywhere that has a separate price for farangs and i don't think that I'm missing anything. when it begins to happen by the thousands things will change or not and Thailand will become a tourist wasteland. maybe the gummint wants Thailand for thais and, of course, their benefactors the chinese.

Do you never go to local produce markets, very few ever have prices for fruit and veg? Same for night market very few products have prices. We have always bought bananas from the same market stall which we hang in the garden to attract birds and squirrels, it works fantastic. When my wife buys she is charged 15 Baht a bunch, I went last week and the same woman wanted to charge me 45 Baht, I questioned this and she said "No is always 45", which was a total lie. We no longer buy from that stall, that is all anyone can do.handdrummer wrote:i don't go anywhere that has a separate price for farangs and i don't think that I'm missing anything. when it begins to happen by the thousands things will change or not and Thailand will become a tourist wasteland. maybe the gummint wants Thailand for thais and, of course, their benefactors the chinese.
Most stalls in Night market bump the price when a Farang ask.

i think it is foolish to waste time and energy on this matter---- it all part of expat life, same in EVERY country in Asia and even in southern Europe.
