No Sun Loungers on Takiab beach on a Wednesday
Just been to Takiab for the day and found most places shut and " no sun loungers" , no real reason given, but found out from a relative who lives here that she was told today that no loungers allowed on a Wednesday. You can have the lounger cushions and towel but not the lounger itself. Can things get anymore barmy?

Well of course they can and undoubtedly will. It gives many of us expats hours of endless fun speculating on the rediculous that could never happen but.....usually does it's like watching a cross between Monty Pythons and Fawlty Towers for the first time.....anything can happen.taffinexile wrote:Can things get anymore barmy?

^^ maybe an illustration is needed
Phuket is getting it far worse, as a quote from the BP might show
NO SUMMER DREAM
While Hua Hin vendors fight for their right to make a living, beach workers on the country’s Andaman coast are facing an even worse fate.
The local police had printed a sign to inform people about the law in both English and Thai, but their translation skills left something to be desired. It read: “No summer dream on beach, start 12 Feb
The local police later explained that they had thought the words “summer dream” meant “beach lounger”.
Maybe a poor translation or perhaps a Freudian slip

We just got back from Anantasila in Khao Takiap this week.
The GM of the hotel & others went to speak to whoever is in charge locally, about the Wednesday closure.
They were told then that there was going to be a new rule, that the beach will be closed from May until November!
Now, whether they will actually go through with this, I don't no, but every guest was asked to write a letter upon their return home to complain about it.
Sounds crazy to me but TIT

If that is true, it will have a catastrophic effect on the area, and I would guess affect the income of thousands. Many businesses barely tick over during that period anyway. Notwithstanding sex tourism and golf, what would be left to attract visitors to the area? Venezia, Floating Market, etc, etc.Rob c wrote:They were told then that there was going to be a new rule, that the beach will be closed from May until November!
It's no wonder the hotel is asking for help.

Barricade the entrances?
Regardless of how they do it, if the message goes out to the world that Hua Hin Beach is closed for 6 months every year, who is going to be stupid enough to visit for a beach holiday in that period, when there are thousands of other beaches worldwide that have no restrictions?
Just another proposal from the Ministry of Stupid Ideas I hope.

It does seem fairly clear that the junta are either not interested in the effect on tourism, not just in Hua Hin, but elsewhere in Thailand, or by the very nature of the beast they are, no-one is actually prepared to say to the Generalissimo and his cronies, "look guy's, this is a really dumb idea". Just looking at the guy's impatience on TV and in his constant threats to the media, it's pretty evident he doesn't like, or cannot deal with his vision for Thailand being challenged.
Talk is cheap
Re: No Sun Loungers on Takiab beach on a Wednesday
Sorry, rather than closed I mean no sun loungers or umbrellas allowed. If true however, as mentioned above it will affect all in the supply chain to the hotels and beach restaurants all the way back to the farmer or fisherman.
Anyone from Europe wanting to take a summer holiday break will surely go elsewhere?

The Takiab restaurants have already moved their businesses back, one telling us it cost them 300,000 baht. Then take away the umbrellas, there won't be anyone there, the weekend Thais certainly won't go, I don't imagine many others will either?

Same has happened in Phuket, all properties that have been using the beach that did not have the correct permits were given notice to move then away from the beach. If they did not comply, they send in the government workers to pull them down. It has affected all beaches either side of Patong.
From what I could make out, it was all about encroachment of the businesses onto the beach, and the Junta decided that the beach should return to what it should be (a public beach) instead of making money for the business owners who had no permits to do so.
Surin beach has had nearly all the businesses either demolished or closed down, and Patong had no beach loungers etc on the beach. Only allowed towels or mats.
Last photos I saw of Surin Beach, it resembled more of a building site than a 5 star beach resort.
Patong restraunts along the beach around the Lifeguard Towers have moved back tables and put sun beds on their grounds for customers to use. Funny enough it has really returned an island feel to the beach rather than an Ibiza type resort.
Seems to not have any affect on Koh Samui, beach chairs and eating places still along the beaches in Chaewang & Lamai so far.
So it is not that Hua Hin is being targeted, just following along with what has been happening elsewhere in Thailand.
I am more interested in what was said abut the beach closing for 6 months in Hua Hin from May to September. How are they going to be able to close the beach off from the public. Normally the Jazz Festival is happening during that period. Cannot see the towns businesses being to happy at not being able to hold that festival as it is so popular.
I am looking at coming to Hua Hin in September, so obviously interested in any info on the beach being closed at that time from anyone who has any info on what is going to happen

you obviously missed Rob c's follow up reply, in which he confirmed it was just the sun loungers and umbrellas being banned for 6 months, not the beach being closedchelsea wrote:Same has happened in Phuket, all properties that have been using the beach that did not have the correct permits were given notice to move then away from the beach.
