"Nudity" on the streets of Hua Hin

Post by DawnHRD »

I was going from my home to Market Village today, which meant I had to go down soi ninety-whatever (the one with Amara Inn). Anyone who's been down there will know that it's a largely Thai area, with lots of shacks & cheap housing. As I was nearing the end a farang girl (tourist, I think) & her boyfriend were walking up. She was obviously coming back from the beach & was wearing a pair of hotpants & a bikini top. In a Thai housing area.
Got to admit this is one of my pet peeves, as it shows a total disregard for others, for the Thai culture, and even for self! I've seen girls just wearing bikinis (& nothing else!) in Burger King, I've seen middle aged women wearing bikinis & cover ups in temple grounds &, as for walking through town - well, you see partial nudity all the time. :guns:
Now before some wit accuses me of wishing I had the figure to wear that sort of clothing, some of these women definitely did not have a figure that anyone but their husbands would wish to see that much of! And perhaps not even them!
My problem is with the fact that these women believe they have the right to go where they please, dressed how they please. This is LOS, not Ibiza, many Thais go to the beach & swim fully dressed, why would Farang women, seeing that, not realise that the Thai culture promotes modesty & they might be wise to cover up as they leave the beach? Are they really so arrogant that they think everyone wants to see them in a state of undress? Do they not realise what message they are sending about themselves and farang women in general? Do they think at all? Does anyone else have any opinions on this? Does anyone think it doesn't matter & is pretty much accepted? I'd be interested to hear other views.

To look at, obviously I like. But I think it is wrong because the home country morals say no, and that should be respected.

Problem is that most tourist do not get wised up about Thai culture and do not realise

Traval agents are to blame. Perhaps hotels should have a handout to give a brief outline of customs

I’ve had them in the shop like that. Sometimes I’ve been in the office upstairs, and mobile rings, a member of staff downstairs says, Khun Day, Farrang, sexy lady, come help.
I know they are embarrassed about something. Down I go, to find a sixteen stone German lady, complete with short, shorts, tucked under her belly, and bikini top tucked above her belly line and everything ‘hanging’ in between, hair sprouting everywhere, which definitely makes me feel folicly challenged.

Put it away please, puts ‘me’ off my food, let alone my customers.

I agree it shows no respect of the Thai locals, but it is normal in Holiday destinations within Europe, these people are either tourists or short term expats, maybe a dress code would be appropriate, but I can’t see any Thai business turning down a sale based on what the customer is wearing.

Actually I am not a judge and it is not my duty. But a few months ago I saw one Farang about 50 years old. And I mean that I saw him many times on the streets and allways without shirt.. He was quite stupid looking without decent clothes.

Maybe some people have been too many times at a Gran Canaria?

Not only women, for sure.
Many fat, drunk shirtless tossers who think their corpus is God's gift to the world.
Alas, too many think they are in Thai-land Theme Park and not a country with its own standards. :guns:

Totally agreed Johnnyk,

I've 2 of these half-naked gentlemen in my street, too.
One old German guy and his Swedish counterpart.
Both swagger daily several hours in short swimming trunks around, as if the street belongs to them and their big beer bellies.
The Thai-neighbors only call them “Khun Baaâ€

I think Khun Richard has hit the nail on the head here. There is nothing outside of guide books which are really only read by travellers in Thailand that states that semi nudity is unaccepatable. That coupled with other images of Thailand from abroad make people assume that it is acceptable as it is in Spain where they have almost certainly been before and other destinations. I have even seen pictures in British travel brochures showing beaches full of bikini clad farang. My belief that it should be accepted on the beach only with every exit showing a sign both pictorial and in English and Thai stating exactly what should be covered before passing that point.

That way if you do not wish to be confrontred by some 60 year old German couple with a combined wieght of 300KG then go to another beach.

When it comes to younger ladies walking around topless it can be dangerous. When I saw younger women walking down down the beach road in Juan Les Pin, France, where it is legal to do so, when I was working nearby, I collided with two lamposts, a parked truck and a Rotweiller in the space of just three weekends which caused in total the need for eight stitches and a tetanus injection.

Hope the tetanus injection protected the Rotty and his stitches didn't leave scars :thumb:

Unfortunately no. The beast had to be put down and the truck became an insurance write off.

Think that would be a good idea about signs at exits to the beach. Wish we could talk someone (tessadban? hotels?) into getting that done! And yes, it would be good for both sexes. Fully agree with you about the shirtless beer bellies walking around. I only didn't mention that because I have, quite often, seen Thai men walking around the streets without shirts & I was trying to make a point about culture!

As for the beach - well if you go to the beach you're going to see some large, beached marine mammals. Just a risk you've got to take!

BTW, Guess, off thread totally, but why are you now in Ypres? Something to do with trench warfare? Or the rain & mud in HH at the moment? :?

I can only agree what the wellknown wirters before me said
foreing Tourists just don't know how to act acordingly to our customs. They think what you can do in Fuerteventura in Spain you can do the same here in Thailand. I'm a Thai and find it really unpleasant to see Woman well beyond the ages of wearing a Bikini and still they wear them anyways. just as Mrs. Dawn had said.
It Is time that Hotels, Travel Agents, and Tour Operators take some action about this carelessness and give alll guets a leaflet explainig the culure and dress codes so tha foreigners understand and Act accordingly. it would not be so diffcult to do right? evertone???!!!!!
