We were in HH last year during the New Year's day celebrations and there was a show around 7.30 pm in the evening at the park on soi 76 - fireworks, lion dance, acrobats, etc. It was good fun and we easily got a seat by arriving a bit early.
I do not think there were any ads for it. The locals just seemed to know if was happening.
Look out for it if you have kids, or like this sort of entertainment.
You will know if it is happening because they will be setting up seats, etc., during the day.

There's also an event at Pone Kingpetch park (Soi 76 near Red Cross).

Here's the poster:
20140114105004.jpg
Doesn't say very much except for the date 30 January.

But the tetsabahn website says "...

My translation:
Tetsabahn Hua Hin will host a Chinese New Year festival on Thursday 30 January 2014 from 4.30pm. Starting with a dragon and lion procession from Pone Kingpetch park (Soi 76), along Petchkasem to GeeAnTung crossroad, then Chomsin, to in front of the charity foundation (mulinitee), then along Srasong, back to Pone Kingpetch park. Then there'll be a grand opening ceremony followed by various shows, e.g. dragon dances, lion dances, magic show, Chinese mask and costume changing magic show (sort of quick change show).

It doesn't say anything about food and drink, but there usually is some.

I've just driven past the park, and the show's props are starting to look good.

Working in a Trilingual school for the past 3 years, I have learned to embrace the Chinese New Year celebrations alongside the dozen or so Chinese teachers here.

Lovely ladies dressed in beautiful red dresses, lots of firecrackers and other 'bangy' stuff (I've heard our Pharvey's into all that :D ), expert Chinese performers doing all sorts of crazy stunts at a fair height, a long break off work and best of all...

... the red envelopes you recieve (ampao?) with a little cash in there for good luck and prosperity from 300 parents :D .

kidding aside, it really is a great few days of celebration. Try to get yourselves down to any of the Chinese New Year events going on. Plenty on in Bangkok to enjoy.

Chinese companies often pay the annual bonus a"t cny. It comes as cash in a red envelope and the tax man is not

I went to my first ever Chinese New Year Show yesterday evening. The show was held at Market Village, but unfortunately the management's development the centre's forecourt is making the staging of such a show unfeasible to absolutely dangerous.
