Through a travel agent friend of mine we fixed up a 2 day trip. It involved a mini bas (collection from your hotel) and a drive up to Ayutihaya (spelling!!).
After doing the temples we joined a converted, junk like boat and cruised down the river in style.
Richard/Jaime,

If someone was doing Ayutthaya as a one-day trip from Bangkok, would you say that's enough time to have a decent enough look around the main temple sites, bearing in mind half the day will probably be spent travelling ?

Thanks,

Anyone been up the Bayoke Tower?
Worth a look?
Yeah, we popped up there one morning for open air breakfast, excellent views, not expensive or anything. Definately worth it.

Also speaking of open air restaurants, there's a top quality open air roof-top restaurant called Sirocco in the State Tower on Silom Road near the river.
This place is quite expensive, but definately worth it for big celebrations/anniversaries or whatever. Very fashionable place, with jazz band playing, and the best views over Bangkok and river.
Apparently its the highest open-air restaurant in the world (or so they say).
You can just go up there and have a drink at their bar also.

Burger,

Sure you can do Ayuti in a day if all you want is to see the temples

Burger / Richard,

We did the Ayutthaya trip through Will at DTC in February. Never done it before.

Coach up, round 2 temple locations (more than enough) plus boat back to Bangers (late lunch on the boat).

Tip, ensure coach up and temples in morning before it gets too hot. They also do boat up and coach back - which means walking round temples at the hottest part of the day.

A good day out.

Prices from Will (Feb 06)

"Ayutthaya World Heritage Tour" - 2 pers Baht 3,100

Hope this helps

Enjoy - we did

Ayuthaya is definitely 'do-able' as a day trip. More like a half day really. It's only about an hour from the Sukhumvit Road area by Taxi. We hired a taxi for the day and took our Rough Guide to Bangkok as our guide. Thoroughly enjoyed it, although it was my first time in Thailand so I was doing plenty of rubber-necking wherever I went!

We got up late, leaving BKK mid morning and spent the middle part of the day in Ayuthaya ,leaving plenty of time for a shower, s**t and shave on return to BKK before an early start to the beer swilling, as was my want in them good ol' days!

To wander off thread a bit, the other day I saw a backpacker here (in Europe) avidly reading The Rough Guide to Luxembourg! That’s going out on a limb isn’t it, roughing it in the richest country (per capita) in the world.
To the average Luxembourgian, roughing it means going for a five course meal, and having to order from the second half of the wine list! I imagine it must be full of good advice on how you can save money by leaving your valet at home and dressing yourself, with a useful diagram of how to tie your shoelaces.

Yeah, done that one an' all - Muang Boran (Ancient City). A good place to go for some peace and quiet in acres of parkland. Take a picnic. Which reminds me, when I went to Ayuthaya the quality and choice of eating places was fairly low.
