Purchasing a used car

Post by Bomber »

I am in the process of purchasing a used car through a broker in Bangkok and he is insisting that I pay the full amount and then the blue book will be transferred into my name the next day. I am uncomfortable paying the full amount before the blue book is transferred into my name. Is this normal practice?

Thanks

Regards

I can't vouch for the accuracy of what's in the article referred to below (I haven't gone through the process of buying a car yet and have little experience here yet) but one part of the article that caught my eye was "Do not give the owner any money until the legality of the car has been checked by the DLT... Once all this paperwork has been handed in, along with the Blue Book, you'll be given a red license plate number plate... Now, pay the original owner the money for the used car, and the car is legally yours."

Search Google for "how-buy-used-car-bangkok-thailand-cheaper" in the "Yahoo! Voices" forum for the article

Can he send you a copy of the Blue book? At least you can verify that the car is in his name or the owners name and that he can transfer it legally. You would then need to verify that he has all of the forms signed by the owner to transfer the Blue Book. It is not that difficult, but everything has to be in order. And the broker may have connections and experience. If you cna verify that, no problem.
I wouldn't have to manage my anger if people could learn to mange their stupidity!

Hi Bomber,

Its not Trotters Independant Trading is it??

Seriously, I guess you did some research on the company your using - if they have a good record and are well known they have no reason to rip you off, if your present at the transfer you could either say that you will hand over cash the moment the transfer is complete once you pay they handover docs.
We have the same problem with house transfers, as in any deal there has to be some level of trust.
Is there anything in particular thats worrying you?

Cheers,

I am fairly new to the forum and not sure if it is ok to mention the dealers name, however I have done some research and they seem to check out ok. I agree there needs to be some level of trust but at the same time I do not want to get ripped off. He has offered that I can withhold some of the price but if this is the case why not the entire amount?

I think I will check out the documentation and then make a call.

thanks all.

Update. All has gone well and we managed to go to DLT and complete all formalities before payment was made. Thanks for the information provided it was very helpful.

By the way the dealer could not have been more helpful and I would be happy to recommend his services.
