The car is the Panther De Ville

The Panther De Ville was a neo-classic luxury vehicle model from Panther Westwinds, the British specialty maker. Offered from 1974 to 1985, the De Ville was conceived by Robert Jankel to appeal to the taste of nouveau riche customers, including singer Elton John and actor Oliver Reed. About 60 De Villes were hand-built, including eleven two-door convertibles

The Panther De Ville was equipped with Jaguar suspension, power steering and automatic transmission, so it was an easy car to drive and quite quick, although poor aerodynamics tended to keep the top speed low. Interiors were lavish and often featured TV sets and drinks bars.

A Panther De Ville was used in Disney's 1996 live-action movie 101 Dalmatians as Cruella De Vil's car. The Jaguar engine in the car was replaced with a small-block Chevrolet V8.

In the early 1980s a family friend was the head of entertainment at a Sandown holiday park. Oliver Reed was his long term friend and they had worked together in a few movies where our family friend had played bit parts.

We were introduced to Mr Reed at the bar....where else?

We had a few drinks with him and his body heavy bodyguards. We left them at the bar at a respectable time.

In the morning, on the way to breakfast Oliver was at the boot of his Panther de Ville car (the one pictured), which was full of Champaign. Having spent his entire night in the bar, he was now happily drinking from one bottle and offered us a bottle to have with our breakfast.

He certainly lived up to his reputation but I have to also say that we were staying at a family resort and he behaved impeccably and did not cause any problems...he was quite the practised drunken gentleman and not the drunken oaf that we often hear of.
His bodyguards/mates on the other hand were not to be messed with......

I remember seeing the Panther De Ville at the motor show in the NEC in the late seventies. My Father was in the motor trade and always had tickets. Panther also made smaller convertibles styled more like a Morgan and I remember seeing a bizarre six wheeled sports car with four steered front wheels like the Tyrrell racing car but that was probably just a concept.

Actually I was down the Moselle on the bicycle again this weekend but I only came across a 2CV club and seeing as there's not much of a challenge in trying to identify those, I didn't bother getting the camera out.

If you look at the photo above, the car is in Luxembourg, the other side of the river is Germany and if you go about 15 Km to the right you get to Schengen where you meet the French border so they hadn't come far!
