Leyland wins Peking to Paris rally

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/motors ... ris-rally/

In one of the most fitting motorsport victories in recent times, a Leyland P76 last weekend won the Peking to Paris Rally in the same month the much- maligned model celebrated its 40th anniversary.
The rally-winning P76 was driven by 81-year-old Gerry Crown, with fellow Australian Matt Bryson in the navigator's seat. In what will be a surprise for some, rallying features very early in the P76's heritage.
A P76 won the Targa Florio stage of the 1974 World Cup Rally and finished 13th overall. In recognition of that, Leyland issued a special Targa Florio limited edition of the P76, a variant now highly sought after.
In this year's Peking rally, the Australians in the P76 battled throughout the event against repeated challenges from the British duo Peter Lovett and Tim Smith in a 1965 Porsche 911, who were forced by the Aussies to eventually settle for second place.
"The victory is all down to the car," Crown told the event's organisers, the Endurance Rally Association.
"Every night Matt got under the car, checking and fixing everything to make sure we kept going hard. It's the best rally car I've ever driven."
Crown has competed in the Peking to Paris Rally three times prior to this year's event and after beating many drivers half his age, said the 2013 rally was the most demanding and the most competitive. It doesn't appear to have put him off though.
"Now I'm looking forward to a long bath, a long beer, a long meal with my mates - and I'm looking forward to Tibet for the next one," he said.
The Vintageants category for 1932-1941 vehicles was won by the British team of Phil Garratt and Kieron Brown - both first-timers in the rally - in their red 1937 Chevy Fangio Coupe. This vehicle was built in the spirit of the 1939 Chevrolet coupe which was used by the legendary racing driver Juan Manual Fangio during his early years of racing in Argentina.
New Zealanders Bruce and Ben Washington were second in the Vintageants category with their 1929 Chrysler 75 Roadster, with Brits Mike Reeves and Michelle Jana Chan finishing third in their 1940 Ford Coupe.
Out of the 96 cars that left the Great Wall of China on May 28, 86 crossed the finish line in Place Vendome, Paris after 33 days on roads covering 12,880km.
The first Peking to Paris rally was held in 1907, with the first of the historic retrospective Peking-Paris rallies in 1997.

A friend of mine has done that rally twice and his son did it this year. Amazing race!

Is it called something like the "Marchioness"?

Reputedly the first car in the world - built by a French company (don't know without "Googling")..... and ran on steam power. Saw it in a museum many years ago......

Yes the company was founded by Marquis Jules-Albert de Dion, Georges Bouton, and Bouton's brother-in-law Charles Trépardoux.

Can you name the car?

OK..its a bit hard.

It is the De Dion-Bouton

De Dion-Bouton was a French automobile manufacturer and railcar manufacturer operating from 1883 to 1932. The company was founded by the Marquis Jules-Albert de Dion, Georges Bouton, and Bouton's brother-in-law Charles Trépardoux.

The company was formed after de Dion in 1881 saw a toy locomotive in a store window and asked the toymakers to build another. Engineers Bouton and Trépardoux had been making a starvation living on scientific toys at a shop in the Passage de Léon, close to the "rue de la Chapelle" in Paris.[1] Trépardoux had long dreamed of building a steam car, but neither could afford it. De Dion, already inspired by steam (though in the form of rail locomotives)[2] and with plenty of money,[3] agreed, and De Dion, Bouton et Trépardoux was formed in Paris in 1883. This became the De Dion-Bouton automobile company, the world's largest automobile manufacturer for a time, becoming well known for their quality, reliability, and durability.[4]
