Just watching this mornings news where a number of people are missing presumed dead after a land slide in a big limestone quarry in southern petchaburi. The report stated the land slide was due to a recent spate of blasting followed by rain in the area. Wonder if this was the source of the booms. Vision showed some huge lumps of rock as big as a house lying around the blast face, must have user some big crackers to get that sized stuff to move.

The army disposing of old ordnance might make a lot of noise, but it is unlikely to cause damaging ground tremors, as such operations are normally conducted on the surface, with minimal ground disturbance. If there is a clear line of sight, shock waves through the air can damage brittle materials such as glass and plaster.

Quarrying seems a much more likely culprit for what has been reported.

It is not impossible for shock waves from quarrying operations to travel significant distances through dense rock formations, but soft terrain such as sand and mud very quickly damps them.

Given the variable geology of HH, it would not be very surprising if some people felt vibrations, whilst others closer to the source felt nothing at all.

Luke,

Indeed, if it came from southern Petchaburi "the force was strong" and "came from a galaxy far, far away!"

Explosions or thunder around Soi 94?

Post by huahin4ever »

I'm living in Soi 94 and this morning I have heard some bangs/explosions some distance away. I cannot see any weather causing thunder so it must probably be something else. Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

100% not thunder

Those bangs this morning were some type of explosions

The frequency pattern and length of them(single bangs) were such not to be thunder

However rumbles of thunder were certainly heard later on

Army on manoeuvres apparantly. My other half in Bkk sent me a line warning this morning, which I only saw when back home early evening. saying there have been reports of windows and houses shaking / vibrating as a consequence. So its been announced somewhere.

Yes, thunder claps are never repeatedly (30 times) exactly the same length of time namely only one second long, they rumble on for a few seconds or more
