Re: Car Challenge?
Well done Steve, the codename for the Princess was 'Diablo'.
My understanding is that the whole 70's Italian wedge thing came from Bertone studios in the late 60's and was turned into such gems as the LP400 (countach later the Diablo), the De Tomaso Pantera, the Lancia Stratos, the Alfa GTV6, the Lotus Esprit, the DeLorean and the Austin Princess.
I think the Princess, from the front has quite a resemblance to the GTV6 and to be fair to the old Princess, not many of the 70's wedges had very nice back-ends. Further reading and some pictures of pre-production ideas at http://www.leylandprincess.co.uk/PrincessDev.htm
A much nicer, though equally unreliable, Alfa GTV6 Proper yellow wedges from proper Italian designers

Sadly - I have to own up to owning one of these sad yellow wedges - it was a heap of shite
Not a patch on the previous TRs
So
What was the difference between it's predecessor the TR6 and all the TRs prior..............

Re: Car Challenge?
I think it was the same fellow, Harris Mann, who also brought us the stomach churning Allegro, the polished turd that was the Morris Ital (own up who bought one of those), the Mini Metro atrocity and the less than magical Maestro. And the colour choices! Why did BL think brown and any number of shades of brown ranging from 'dark constipation' to 'bad night at the curry house' was the right colour for a car? I'm sure that must have been an 'in joke'.
I'd say his TR7 effort was probably his best looking, but then once you get it made by BL workers, parts of it probably weren't even destined for a TR7 but just happened to be handy at the time.
You could almost forgive all that if they'd managed to produce the SD1 so that when it rained, water wasn't intentionally diverted into the footwells and the expanded foam headlining didn't snow on you when you hit a bump.

Re: Car Challenge?
Was the TR6 the first one to come as a hard top, with the option of a soft top when the previous ones had all been soft top only?Terry wrote:Sadly - I have to own up to owning one of these sad yellow wedges - it was a heap of shite

The biggest difference was the change to monocoque construction from the previous body on frame type.Terry wrote:What was the difference between it's predecessor the TR6 and all the TRs prior..............

Hey they were not all bad, I had a rover Sdi 2600se and loved it.
Also had a marina 1.8 Tc which to be honest in its time was a decent motor with a good turn of pace.
After these I moved on to a Datsun 280 zx which was my pride and joy until an old faggot crossed 2 lanes and ripped the side out.

The only two cars of that era that I could identify are the RR Silver Ghost and the Model T Ford and that is definately neither of those.
