Well rain has to start and stop somewhere, doesn't it!

I guess I'm used to it as the area of England I come from is pretty much the same. But when you're out and about in your car/bike and all of a sudden 'it starts to rain' check out the surfaces of the road and pavement around you, often you'll find they're already soaked; you've just hit the barrier. If you're a passenger, look behind you and you might even see the wet/dry divide.

It can be insanely localised here though, and split too. I live on the far south of town and my friend on the far north. One time we both left our houses and were soaked by the time we arrived in the, bone dry, soi.

The other year the rain stopped half way across our garden the left side it was raining but on the far right it was dry. As Pleng says the rain has to stop somewhere!

The above seems to be a caution if you want to strip down, soap up and rinse off under the drain spout.  Pete

Vicente causes floods in North, flight woes
(Graphic provided by the Pacific Disaster Center of Hawaii shows that upper Thailand will be affected by heavy rains from Typhoon Vicente Tuesday through at least Friday.)

Tropical storm Vicente has triggered floods in parts of the North and caused delays and the cancellation of several flights, officials said Tuesday.

The Meteorological Department said Vicente was downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm Tuesday.

The department said the storm is expected to pass over northern Vietnam Wednesday.

Somchai Baimuang, the department's deputy director-general said the effects from Vicente will still be felt over parts of the North, Northeast, East and South until Friday.

People living in low-lying areas near waterways and hillsides should take precautions, he said.

Storm warnings are in effect in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, Phayao, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Loei, Nongkhai, Bung Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, and Phangnga.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said flood surveillance measures were in place in regions expected to be lashed by torrential rain.

Boats and other vital equipment are on standby if the evacuation of residents becomes necessary, said the department.

In Chiang Rai, a landslide caused by a heavy downpour buried a house in Ban Therd Thai village in Mae Fa Luang district yesterday. No one was injured.

In Phayao, more than 2,000 rai of farmland were inundated after the nearby Oy and Kuan rivers burst their banks after hours of heavy rain in Pong district.

The flooding cut the main road linking Don Ngern and Luang villages in tambon Oy. The road was submerged under 50cm of water yesterday.

Authorities fear more rain will cause flooding to spread rapidly as the two overflowing rivers are tributaries of the Yom River.

Vicente, which battered Hong Hong yesterday, forced the cancellations of a number of passenger and cargo flights between Suvarnabhumi and the former British colony.

Two Thai Airways International flights from Hong Kong, one to Suvarnabhumi and the other to Phuket, were delayed by up to two hours as a result of the extreme weather conditions yesterday, according to Samat Phoom-orn, THAI's director for emergency response.

Five Cathay Pacific flights were diverted and forced to make unscheduled landings at Suvarnabhumi after they were informed they could not land in Hong Kong because of the storm.

Heavy rain warning for central areas

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/3 ... tral-areas

Published: 12/08/2012 at 01:50 AM
Newspaper section: News

Central provinces have been warned to prepare for heavy rainfall next month as the southwest monsoon which has triggered floods in many northern provinces makes its way down to the area.

Meteorological Department deputy chief Somchai Baimuang yesterday said heavy rainfalls that wreaked havoc in northern provinces over the past few days would begin to ease today as the monsoon trough, which had been covering the North since late last month, heads south.

Central provinces would be hit by heavy rains triggered by the monsoon trough, he said.

"The rainfall volume may not be so high if the country is affected only by the monsoon, but if we are hit by storms, the situation will be worrying," he said.

According to a department projection, at least two tropical cyclones will affect Thailand this month and next.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department yesterday reported that five provinces have been affected by flooding and thunderstorms. They are Mae Hong Son, Tak, Phayao, Nan and Phitsanulok.

Two people, including a female student, were injured by a tree that was toppled by strong winds in the Muang Phitsanulok area.

In Tak province, the swollen Moei River overflowed its banks in some areas including the famous Rim Meoi border market in Mae Sot province.

Shops and houses were under one metre of floodwater.

Mae Sot's tap water production plant was also flooded on Friday night. District residents had to live without tap water until authorities managed to move the tap water production unit to higher ground yesterday evening.

At least 20 factories in the district were forced to suspend operations as the deluge made roads impassable.

In Nan province, flash floods damaged over 8,000 rai of farmland and affected residents in Chalerm Prakiat, Muang Nan, Wiang Sa and Tha Wang Pha districts.

Ranong faces more floods, landslides

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/nationa ... 89931.html

Large parts of Ranong province were flooded yesterday after a heavy downpour. Residents in risky zones have been told prepare for evacuation if the situation worsens.
Ranong residents will be bracing for more floods and landslides today and tomorrow.

"We have issued warnings because our province is still under a low-pressure ridge," Ranong disaster-prevention-and-mitigation chief Chaowalit Nitararat said yesterday.

He was speaking after landslides spilled onto the Phetkasem Road in more than 10 spots.

Ranong's assistant highway chief Arthon Kuasin said the landslides came in the wake of a heavy downpour and that machines had been deployed to remove the landmass from the road.

"Drivers should be careful," he said.

Flash floods have already swamped many communities in Ranong's La-un district, affecting more than 100 residents.

Colonel Chalermporn Khamkhieo, chief of the 25th Infantry Division's 2nd Battalion, said 90 soldiers had been dispatched to help flood victims.

In the North, flooding has already wreaked havoc in many areas. In Lamphun, the Mae Tha, Ban Thi, Pa Sang, Li and Thung Hua Chang districts had been declared disaster zones. Up to 40,481 people in 116 villages were inundated. Fortunately there have been no reports of casualties.

In Phitsanulok, disaster-prevention-and-mitigation chief Boonying Khumsuphan warned people in Wat Bote, Chat Trakan, Nakhon Thai, Noen Maprang and Wang Thong districts to beware of possible flash floods and mudslides.

"Run-off water is flowing down to our province and now there's heavy rain as well," he said.

The Meteorological Department forecast downpours in many zones across the country until today. Most of Bangkok and its adjacent provinces will face thundershowers and rain.

Although the rains have not flooded the capital, traffic congestion brought many major roads in Bangkok to a standstill yesterday morning.

FM 91 Traffic Pro radio station received reports of serious congestion on Vibhavadi-Rangsit, Paholyothin, Ram-Indra, Chaengwatthana, Ngamwongwan, Chaiyapruek, Ratchadaphisek, Serithai, Ramkhamhaeng, Rama IX and Srinakharin roads all morning. Traffic on several expressways such as Bang Na-Bon Kai also came to a standstill, and only began to ease in the afternoon.

The station said 49 road accidents had been reported in Bangkok and its adjacent provinces yesterday, killing two and injuring 37 others.

The weather bureau also warned boatmen to beware of rough weather in the upper part of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea over the next couple of days.

Storms set to dump heavy rains on Thailand this weekend
THE NATION October 2, 2012 1:00 am

100mm-per-hour deluge forecast for Northeast, North, Central regions
Large storms are expected to bring heavy downpours throughout the country by the coming weekend, a senior weatherman said yesterday.

The regions to be hardest hit are the lower Northeast, middle North and upper Central, said Somchai Baimuang, deputy director-general of the Meteorological Department. Rainfall would be high, he predicted, at more than 100mm per hour. By comparison, a 60mm-per-hour shower ordinarily leaves Bangkok inundated for 12 hours afterwards.

Weather forecasters are keeping an eye on Typhoon Jelawat as it moves toward Taiwan and Tropical Storm Ewiniar heading toward Japan. The typhoon left at least two people dead and more than 180 injured in Japan over the weekend before passing out into the Pacific yesterday, according to news agencies.

Both storms are influencing heavy rains in Thailand, said Royol Jitdon, an expert on the Water and Flood Resources Management Committee.

Royol said his committee had nothing to do with the recent flooding in Bangkok - the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration operates the watergates.

He said he was keeping watch on the brimming reservoirs in Nakhon Ratchasima. Excessive water could leave eastern provinces inundated as it flows to Bangkok.

The committee is also working on speeding up water drainage in eastern Bangkok, but that is difficult because the waterways there are crooked and narrow, Royol added.

On the bright side, an unnamed tropical depression will be travelling past Vietnam on Thursday and could bring much-needed rain to drought-stricken northeastern provinces, Royol said.

But many provinces, especially Sukhothai and Phitsanulok in the lower North, are at risk of too much rain. Ayutthaya also faces repeated flooding, Royol said.

Eight of 12 districts in Phichit have been announced as disaster zones following floods caused by heavy rain coupled with the overflowing Yom River, which has swelled from runoff in the North.

Meanwhile, there is good progress on the construction of dams and floodgates, including the Bang Kruay watergate in Nonthaburi, said Agriculture Minister Theera Wongsamut. The Bang Kruay gate could prevent mass floods in western Bangkok and other provinces west of the Chao Phrya River.

A permanent floodwall on the Chao Phraya's western bank has been approved and it would prevent floods in western Bangkok as well, Theera said.
