"......In Prachuap Khiri Khan, waves of up to four metres yesterday eroded about one kilometre of the coastline at Thung Pradu coastal village in Thap Sakae district. The waves also damaged several houses and shops.

Deputy Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Apinand Chantharangsi said the province yesterday declared Hua Hin, Sam Roi Yot, Kui Buri and Thap Sakae districts disaster areas.

An initial survey found more than 500 households have been affected by strong waves, Mr Apinand said.

He has asked officials to provide assistance to affected residents. Strong winds have hampered relief work, he conceded.

Mrs Somprapa Morakarn, chairwoman of the shop operators club of Hua Hin, said waves that hit the beach town yesterday morning washed away some shops and stalls. Many shop owners and staff fled as the waves hit, she said.

Athikul Budying, deputy mayor of Hua Hin municipality, yesterday ordered municipal officials to survey damage caused by the waves and help people move their belongings to higher ground. Tourists and residents were told not to swim in the sea.

In Chumphon, high waves and strong winds continued to affect several coastal areas, while officials were sent to survey areas damaged by the waves......."

I'm afraid that what tourists don't see is the effect on fishing. Boats have struggled to get out to sea for much of December. It's a dangerous industry at the best of times but it does provide HuaHin and the surrounding area with valuable income - providing Bangkok and other places with seafood supplies. Losing the best part of a months income will be devastating for most of those fishing families.

kalbow wrote:Hmmmm, high tides yes, but 2-4m high waves I think maybe a slight exaggeration. When the first of these waves started arriving a few weeks back I took my little boogie board out for a ride. Got one ride in and found the current had washed me 500m down the beach - not worth the effort getting out there!

Well if they were 2-4m waves we have the new surfing capital of the world here !!!! Happy days thousands of shirtless dope heads will be arriving lol

I spotted this report on 'Stickman' from a couple of weeks ago, is the beach back to normal around the Hilton Yet?
Hard hit Hua Hin.

There are some photo opportunities of the damage at Hua Hin where I am now. Beach bars have disappeared, some are still present but reduced to rubble. Sea walls have been destroyed. At the recently opened, very upmarket Cape Nidra Hotel the sea wall has been demolished and access to the beach is an obstacle course. Palm trees have been uprooted out front of the Sofitel (now renamed Centara something or other). Most importantly, millions of cubic metres of beach have just disappeared - this sand will probably never return. All this coupled with a savage reduction in tourist levels makes the place look very sorry

The beach area where I walk, from the Sofitel area south towards Takiab is just fine. You can see remnants of the damage caused, like the sea wall at Cape Nidra. It must be a miracle because there is as much sand as there always has been. I'm guessing that the author of that piece is a prize drama queen cock head.

Agree with the above. I walk the beach regularly and whilst I don't bother venturing much beyond Chiva Som/Hyatt at the moment as the tide's too high after that (and will be for probably another month) the beach looks pretty normal at this time of year to me.
Yes, some storm damage but not much and certain small areas are quite shingly rather than sandy, but that's just broken shells that are always washed up from Dec-Feb. Plenty of sand otherwise if you can dodge the sunloungers!!
My guess is that the author above never ventured more than 400 meters south of the Sofitel.

My guess is he's never even been to Hua-Hin, and maybe not even to Thailand. Ah well, it takes all types to make the world go round, and besides, it's nice to have some folk around who actually thrive on making an absolute fool of themselves.....lol.
