FIFO

Post by Marky_Mark »

Hi BM
Just wondering if any expats base themselves in Hua Hin and work Fly in Fly out.
Being in our early 30's and a good 20 years off until the investments payoff, we are contemplating a move to Hua Hin next year.. Rent for a good 6 months to a year then build on our 1 rai in Khao Tao.
Do any other BM reside in HH and work FIFO and how do you find it?

I am retired now, but I worked FIFO for years out of Bangkok. In those days Hua Hin was no where near as accessible as it is now, especially from the new Airport.

To me the biggest consideration has to be your family situation. Is your wife Thai, as leaving an expat wife by herself may not be a good idea. The other consideration regardless of Thai wife or not, is just where and what type of rental you have. Do you have school age kids, because that is a big consideration in itself?

Many thanks Nereus for your reply..
Yes thai wife and a little 1 year old daughter..

Possibly look at it for a couple years temporary move, I guess we have the option to come back to Australia if we want too or want the little one to be educated in Oz.

In my line business there are alot of positions working FIFO and potential to earn AUD 20-50k more than what I earn now.. So no problems maintaining my investment properties in Australia

I have several friends who do that but they all have special skills. Most work part time in the middle east and live the rest of the time here on a 6 to 8 week in and 6 to 8 week out schedule. Some are helicopter pilots or mechanics, another is a submerged pipeline consultant, one a deep oil rig diver and yet another works on an offshore commercial fishing vessel.

If you have rare or sought after experience or expertise in an uncommon field of endeavor you will have a good chance of finding that kind of work.

I agree with Nereus though, it may not be a good idea to leave a foreign wife or family behind here for long periods of time unless you have a good support system in place for her/them.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

As an ex-pat wife I coped very well on my own in Hua Hin whilst my husband was working away and although he is retired now I know several european wives who are left here on their own whilst their husbands work off-shore and they all cope. We support each other and on the whole most of us were/are used to coping on our own whilst husbands work abroad/offshore.

Much appreciated. My wife is Thai so troubles there as the family live in Hua Hin.
It's me who wants to relocate more as clearly she likes Australia.
My parents are retired and frequent HH however it's important to me my little one is close to her thai mother in law

I reside in HH and fifo Bkk to various locations to work, latest one is Canada having spent 18months in Far East Russia - only thing is the drive to/from HH, pick a day that you are not travelling up to Bkk the same day as all the Bangkokonians as it's like whacky races...

Moved to live inn HH in January 2000, having been a frequent visitor since '92.
Absolutely no regrets.

Have been FIFOing ever since on various assignments - Taiwan (Twice), Malaysia, Philippines, Qatar, India and now Vietnam.

Allow a good 4 1/2 hrs before your departure time to get to Swampy, and 2 1/2 to 3 hrs from Swampy to HH and you'll be ok.

Yes I remember your visit. I FI late 22/12 and FO on 03/01 p.m. - so if you are around - pop by for a seasonal one.

Not sure if all the boomerangs have returned tho  - but they were good fun

We are not having any monster parties this year, me & MrsT having decided to keep the holiday a basic family affair. Apart from some resident guests that is.

We will be closed on 25 and 26 December and 01 January and no doubt I will be running about HH for most of the rest of the time - but I love it 8)
