Buying a suit in Hua Hin
I am travelling to Hua Hin for the first time in August and have heard that I can get really good quality suits made while I am there. I just wondered if anyone can tell me roughly how much I should expect to pay?

Prices are displayed on boards outside the tailors shops, and are usually inclusive deals for jacket, 2 pants, 2 shirts - that kind of thing. The guys will be able to give you current prices but obviously once you go into a shop you find that for a good wool cloth the price will rise accordingly.
What I would say is order early in your holiday and don't tell them when you are due to leave. Give them more time and don't be rushed, because the tailors know that if they deliver to you the day before you depart you won't have time to go back with any complaints. (And if they know where you are staying they can find out your departure date as well.)

All the shops on the front streets are merley sales rooms--the real tailors are Thais working in back street sweat shops--In a previos thread somebody identified where they are and you can go directly to them althouigh you have to purchase the material, but that is not difficult.--could we have that info please.

Forget it. I did it for my son's wedding and then for the funeral of the grandmother of my daughter in law, but I will never buy a suit again in Hua Hin. Poor quality, lots of wrinkles, bad seems, difficulties to get things corrected. They all are cheaters and liars. I prefer to buy a costume in industrial scale in a department store, this is by far much better.Goodfella71 wrote:I am travelling to Hua Hin for the first time in August and have heard that I can get really good quality suits made while I am there. Never bought one in Hua Hin, but have bought many at Majestic Tailors on Sukhumvit road near soi 4 in Bangkok.
Pleased with the price and quality.
Three fittings so I stop by when I arrive in BKK and schedule the next 2 when I return to leave. Good people too.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. I think I will have a good look around on the first day or so and try and find somewhere that looks ok. Worth a gamble I reckon!!

I don't think you'll be disappointed. Whilst I sympathise with Francois, I think his experience is the exception, rather than the rule.

Indian shop selling cloth by the metre near the lights of Pekky Rd/Chomsin.
Then come from the rail station South, just before Kim's Kitchen restaurant turn left (this Soi brings you out
on Pekky Rd next to Villa s'market)...after the left turn the 3/4th shop on this Soi is a tailor-shop..they will
make your suits etc without the Nepalese getting their cut.

Re: Buying a suit in Hua Hin
If you want a so called custom fit that it cheaper than an off the rack suit at home, by all means have one made here.
I had a suit custom made once while living in Los Angeles. First got educated by a childhood friend's father who's job required that he look like a million bucks in his suits. If you don't know how one is supposed to fit and the proper sequence of fitting it will look like a cheap suit, even if the fabric and workmanship are excellent.
For example, put on the jacket and stand with your normal posture, arms hanging. Are there any puckers, lines, folds, etc in the sleeves? That means it doesn't fit. Does the fabric lie flat across the center of your upper back or is there a bubble? If the tailor says these flaws are because you have bad posture, walk away. The entire point of a custom suit is that it's made to fit you, not the average person.
Do you know where to look on any finished piece of clothing to draw a general conclusion about it's quality in a few seconds? Do you know on which of a jacket's seams it's considered acceptable on an excellent quality suit for the fabric pattern to not match up across the seam? E.g., if the pattern was 1" squares then the squares will be the correct size when the square is made of two pieces of fabric separated by a seam.
Do you know what state of completion the jacket should be in during the first fitting? If the first time you see the jacket it's past that and the guy assessing the fitting is a salesman the result will look like a cheap suit.
It takes MUCH more hand work to make a suit fit right. The only thing keeping the tailor from making a generic fitting suit is his integrity and interest in preserving his reputation. His bottom line will be fighting his integrity.

I think getting a suit made is a metaphor for many things including relationships in Thailand!
Enjoy the experience and the pampering and relative cost. But if you take it home don't look to closely at the stitching and expect it to look good next to more expensive items!!!!

Enjoying 'Retirement'....So many jobs to do, I don't know how I ever had time to work!
Re: Buying a suit in Hua Hin
My wife brought over two medium priced work suits to be copied. You would think it would be simple. Not, dont bother is my advice. Even if the material is slighly better (debatable) the workman ship is average at best and it took over 4 refits even with a suit to copy from and it was still poor by comparison.

There is actually 3 shops all adjoining each other, in the Soi.usual suspect wrote:Indian shop selling cloth by the metre near the lights of Pekky Rd/Chomsin.
