Charcoal in Hua Hin

Post by quick-jonny »

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me where I can buy charcoal for a barbecue in Hua Hin?
The big shop in Market Village doesn't seem to have any - at least I couldn't find it and the sales staff didn't seem to understand what I was looking for.
Any help appreciated.

If you want BBQ fuel rather than genuine charcoal, Villa Market has bags of it.

We use charcoal recycled from coconut shells.

It doesn't smoke, doesn't smell, burns slowly and intensely and is environmentally friendly.

Not sure about the coconut stuff, but the regular charcoal you can get at virtually any mom and pop shop. It usually costs 10 to 15 baht for a carrier bag full. If you use a lot f it, you can also but a huge sack, and of course it works out cheaper that way as well. :thumb:

Sorry, forgot to mention that most Thais won't know what you want if you ask for charcoal, but I'm sure someone of here can tell you the Thai word. If not, don't worry because it's usually easy to spot at the shops - just look for little carriers bags full of black stuff.

This reminded me about the problems I used to have getting the stuff to burn. Solved by putting some coals on one of those wire affairs with handles (used for grilling fish etc) and holding it over the gas flame for a while. You need to be carefull getting it back outside to the BarB - a metal tray helps!

I was watching the travel channel a couple of nights ago and the chef Merilees Parker was in Thailand and was shown how to cook various traditional Thai meals and one place used charcoal and coconut shells together in one of those small one pot size BBQ.
