Disgusted

Post by robby hh »

Hi All

Was in the Market Village on Friday waiting for the lady to choose a book and was approached by two young boys about 9 or 10 one of whom said to me "sukoff" took me a while to work out that this wasnt Thai and a bit longer to come to terms with what he was offering but the repetition of the word and his gestures left no doubt.

Didnt know what to do about this if the lady had arrived back when they were still there I am sure she would have had some choice words for them but my poor version of thai was not up to the occasion.

What really disgusts me is that some queer bastard, probably farang, has taught these kids that they can make money by servicing perverts who would take advantage of kids.

Anyone had a similar experience or any ideas of what can be done to rid the place of scum who do that to kids?

I very much hope that you have made to wrong conclusion here. I have never seen or heard anything like that in Thailand.

I would guess that it is more likely a mispronunciation of Fuckoff which the local school kids seem to think is amusing. I live opposite a school and when the kids are unattended (which seems like a few hours everyday) some will call out to passers by in English. Usually it is just hello or how are you. Sometime the more naughty ones will shout Fuck you. When my wife heres them she breathes fire at them and tells them that she will have a few words with the school principal. It seems no more than just kids being kids.

In your encounter that may also have been the case. Lets hope so.

Robbie,

I had a very similar experience a few years ago in Pattaya. My wife told me to wait by the big tree covered in colourful ribbons at the entrance to Walking Street (not sure if its still there) whilst she went shopping without her farang in tow.

I obediently stood there for about 45 minutes, during which time I was approached twice by two young boys (about 9/10) on separate occassions, both asking me if they could go with me (as with you, their gestures made it very clear what they were offering).

I had always considered myself broad minded until then, but I very quickly became disgusted.

What made things worse was that on my return to the UK, there was a TV programme about the orphanage at Pattaya. Some do-gooder nun was going on about the way farang exploit young kids. From what I had seen, it was completely the opposite ie Thais sending out their kids in search of farang to try to make a few Baht.

In Guess's defence, I too have never experienced anything like that in Thailand. Most times I hear about paedophilia in Thailand it comes from people who have never been there. Not to say that it doesn't exist in Thailand but it is also present in every other country.

I can attest to similar. 1996 I went to the Dusit Zoo in BKK with my then 24 year old luk krung son (50-50 Thai/American). A Thai class was there, early teens 12-14, in uniforms. As we were walking and they were walking we heard at least ten "FU's" and looked only to see big smiles. Me thinks they had no idea what they were saying, and a bit of jai laun on my part and a response in Thai got their attention and that of the teacher in escort who apologized. I do indeed hope Guess is correct on this one. Pete

To add to that I was visiting a friend of my wife in her village some time ago. Their ten year old son was wearing a T-shirt on which was printed, in large capitals 'FUCK YOU!' After a while my wife's friend asked me why I kept looking at her son's T-shirt. So I told her tactfully that the shirt displayed some of the most offensive language in English, that back home, 'nice kids' would not be allowed to wear such a T-shirt and farangs seeing her kid wearing such a T-shirt would not be impressed. Her response was simply - "It's OK for Thailand."

I have since realised that kids wearing such inappropriate T-shirts is the norm in Thailand.

I can assure that there was no misunderstanding of what the kids were offering me - their body language said it all.

Robby says he received similar gestures.

I hope it isn't as widespread these days as it used to be, but face it guys, some of our Thai hosts will still do anything to earn some cheap money.

The gestures made me certain of what it was I was being offered
Hope they never get any takers, then they should stop

Funny for someone who can not write to come out with a ridiculous statement like. You are obviously of extremely limited intellect. My observations co-incide with everybody I have spoken to on the subject including people who have been here a lot longer than I and including Thai Policemen..

What Robby descibes is not common here in Thailand, and I have been to most places in the country. I believe in Cambodia is is more common.

I guess you must frequent low life establishments where maybe it is more likely to happen. Robby's experience in the Market Village obviously is not one of those places.

Let us hope it is an isolated incident..

suede,
It doesn't say on your profile where you live but the implication of your post is that you either live in Thailand or are a frequent visitor here, so have had ample opportunity to assess how common this type of thing is. Because this is a Hua Hin board I also have to assume that you have witnessed this many times in Hua Hin, so my questions to you are; Where has this happened to you? and how often has it happened?
From my perspective I have been in Thailand for most of the last 7 years, mainly in Bangkok (initially) and Hua Hin (for the last 3 years), but have visited many parts of the country including most of the main tourist spots. I have never witnessed anything as described, so I have to make the assumption that it is relatively rare, or that I have always 'just missed' it happening. I do not doubt that it has happened as described, and it is sad to hear, but I agree with Guess in that I do not think it is a common occurrence in Thailand, although it may be in places like Pattaya.
One final thought on this - maybe suede and the others this has happened to walk around in a grubby old mac and leer at young boys?

I did not realise this was a problem - is it making some sort of statement?

Seriously, it does happen, and I just I hope it does not happen to me again. Twice within a 45 minute period did make me feel very uneasy. Maybe it wasn't my grubby old mac, maybe I was inocently waiting in a well known pick-up area? I don't know, but how many others didn't know either?

The thought of it still sickens me, and I think it would be a good idea if this thread was dropped soon.

Thanks to Wanderlust for backing up my observations and experience which also coincides with the view of every single person that I have spoken to before and since. The view of the police in Hua Hin, and this is from Colonel level last night after I made my last post, that any sexual encounters of either sex involving children is intolerable and taken very seriously by the Police. This kind of practice is of a bygone era and all the civilised countries have more or less stamped it out. By civilised I do not include the ailing Cambodia and the despicable Myanmar.

I have had a thought since, that may be applicable here. The fact that two posters have been approached in busy areas reminded me of my brief (fortunately) period of employment in Piccadily Circus in London. (I was working in the travel business overlooking the area for the cynics among you). I noticed very strange behaviour by young men who would always walk to a certain point against a set of railings between the sidewalk and the road and just stand still fo five minutes or so before the person they were meeting came up and then they would both leave together. In my youthfull naivety I thought that this was father meeting son. As I got got wiser and better informed I was told the truth. At that time homosexual prositution was considered a much greater and more unacceptable offence. This meant that certain places had to be designated in secret by those involved in the sordid activities to keep the police unaware. Public places are always better as people become less noticed. I have since seen evidence of such practices in San Francisco, Amsterdam and even Dublin.

It has sprung to mind that maybe Robby and Big Boy have inadvertently stumbled on two of these locations. I lived for three years within 200 metres of the tree in Walking street that was described and walked past it most days. However I never stood in one spot (and never do) for any lenghty period of time.

My sugestion to anybody who has a camera with them to take a picture and or report the incident as quickly as possible to the police. This is one of the few things they will act upon without expecting tp pay. Also do not get into any conversation whatsoever with those that approach you. The situation could backfire on you.

PS I still think the Market Village incident is worth reporting to both Viullage security and HH Police.

I think this topic has run its course, for obvious reasons.
