Forecasters fear huge storm brewing

Predictions of typhoons are worrisome, says minister, tells public to monitor reports.

A devastating storm like typhoons Gay and Linda could strike Thailand this year, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti said yesterday.

"I’m quite concerned," he said, adding that the grim prediction was based on currently available information.

Agencies are closely monitoring developments and the public should keep abreast of weather updates, he said. "People will have to prepare necessary measures to deal with what may happen."

Wanchai Sak-udomchai, head of the weather bureau for the Southern provinces along the east coast, said a monsoon might hit the country late this month.

Torrential rains have washed out dozens of provinces in the past two months, resulting in 227 deaths, including 72 in the South.

Although flood waters have subsided in 35 provinces, up to 16 others remain inundated, affecting 928,237 people.

Rain " if not heavy downpours " continued in Southern provinces including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani and Chumphon.

"Although the rainfall is not as bad as weeks ago, we must stay vigilant," Wanchai said.

Mountains in the South, in particular, are waterlogged and more precipitation could trigger mudslides.

Many places, including Moo 7 of tambon Pak Mak in Surat Thani’s Chaiya district, have suffered landslides. More than 400 people there have taken shelter inside a school for four days.

Adichart Surinkham, spokesman for the Mineral Resources Department, said a team was examining a fissure along the Khao Luang mountain range in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Jaroon Payabarn, kamnan of tambon La-ai in the province’s Chawang district, said initial surveys by village heads and local hunters found that the crack was widening at a cliff.

"That cliff is about 1,000 metres [high]. If it collapses, huge damage can be expected," he said.

In 1989, Typhoon Gay formed in the Gulf of Thailand and caused significant damage in Chumphon province. In 1997, Typhoon Linda caused flooding and some deaths in Thailand after devastating parts of Vietnam; it was the worst storm to hit that country in a century.

In one month I fly back to the LoS and it can't come too soon..

..here in southern England it is over ten degrees below freezing, there's ice everywhere, the car won't start, the house is cold even though the heating's on full blast and there's more snow to come..

- What happened to global bl**dy warming??

Ah. To feel global warming right now, it appears you have to be in Cancun where, it is by all accounts, unseasonably warm at a not unpleasant 25°C.

Warning
"Cool to cold weather in upper Thailand and Heavy Rain with Strong Wind-Wave in South"
No. 6 Time Issued : December 07, 2010

Another ridge of intense high pressure from China has covered upper Thailand and brings cooler weather with 2-4 °C drops and windy.
The prevailing northeast monsoon over the South and the Gulf of Thailand grows stronger and lead to torrential rain and isolated heavy to very heavy fall over the South from Chumphon southward. People in the risky areas should beware of severe heavy rain and possible flash flood during 7-9 December. The strong wind-wave in the Gulf is likely 2-4 meters high. All ships should proceed with caution, and small boats keep ashore during the period.

The advisory is in effect for Thailand from 7 December 2010
Issued at 10.00 p.m.

Samui hit by flood, landslides

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/home/Sa ... 43932.html

Samui Island, a tropical paradise, struggled Tuesday with flood and landslides.
Following hours of heavy downpour in the morning, floodwater filled many areas of Samui and caused landslides. Piles of rock and landmass spread across the road at the Prapa Mountain Pass, paralysing traffic for a long while.
Although ferry and flight services to and from Samui are still running as usual, tourists were advised to check updates before starting their trips.

lilly
I would say the beach and swimming can be enjoyed in Hua Hin most days of the year. In the wet season it normally only rains for an hour or so and that is usually in the late afternoon.
For Europeans November to March seem to be the best climate - 25-30c day and 20 - 25c night. The rest of the year it is around 5c + higher.
And the rain is warm

As a possibility...over this side after a storm when the beach is loaded with wood, it's all picked up by the Thai charcoal makers. There's a village that does nothing but make that stuff, and you guessed it, the entire place including adults and kids are covered in black soot all the time. Pete

It wasn't last week. I managed to get to Chiva Som one day and that was it. The last few hundred yards were quite dangerous as there was no beach at all, waves breaking onto the sea walls and lots of rocks underfoot that I couldn't see. The following day, I gave up maybe a kilometer after the Marriott.
Don't know whether things have changed now, but in past years, the high tides have always been in Dec and maybe Jan.

As this is about the current weather in Hua Hin I can say that it has been extremely hot since Sunday. I played golf on Sunday and today and the temperature and humidity seemed to be more like April/May.

When can we expect it to cool down?
