Just watched the movie for the first time since leaving South-East Asia. It's great to be able to find good movies on youtube (the other one I've just watched was The Green Mile.)
Now then, I thought the Vietnam movie was actually very good, it wasn't about the battles and the fighting or who was right and who was wrong but a lot about how difficult it is to behave according to totally different cultural values. The director has really been able to show the differences (in a short period of time) between western and eastern cultures, for example with the hero trying to date the girl (actually played by a Thai actress Jintara, whom the missus picked up immediately but that's another story.)
During my Thailand years I was lucky enough to have a couple of good friends who actually were in Vietnam and they all said that they don't like to watch movies about the war as the movies are all bs. I know, there are some VN veterans in this forum, what do you say about this movie?

Not the same movie but a friend of mine is in Apocalypse Now, the scene with the Playboy bunnies. He was in Thailand and the movie scouts were rounding up falang to be extras in a few scenes.
He got paid, about $20/day and free food, which helped out his backpacking journey. We rented the vid and, sure enough there he was in a crowd of guys!

I actually did couple of these "acting" jobs in Hong Kong in -88 and was offered a 3 week job because I was able to speak a bit Cantonese. Didn't take that one as I had to hurry north to Beijing were I had promised to meet some friends coming there by the Trans-Siberian. Always like to think what that job would have been like.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
