Terry, did you stop in Hong Kong on your way to India?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/18/20090905/to ... 81b96.html

The fish in question are alligator gar!

The fierce-looking creatures get their name from their long snout, which resembles that of an alligator. While they are an aggressive and carnivorous species, they are not known to attacks humans.
Maybe they're looking for a good home for them...
This is the way

Hi d-m

Interesting story. 8)

This just hilights the unscrupulous pet shop retailers that exist - who just want to sell animals & fish for profit without considering the consequences for the creature or society. :cuss:

I have seen Alligator Gar, Red Tail Catfish and Tiger Catfish all for sale in aquarium shops. These specimens have all been juveniles and about 5 - 7 cm long. All were priced between 500 - 700 THB each.
When I asked the retailer how big they grew, I was told - "oh - not much bigger - very pretty fish eh?"........Bullshit

When I then told him that I had acquired the very same types of fish from a reliable fish breeder in Ratchaburi, for about the same price, and some ten times bigger, he put on an act of amazement. I informed him that the Gar can reach 100 - 150 kg, the Retail about 100kg and the Tigers about 80kg. But I'm sure he knew this. The next time I visited the place the fish were gone.

I know of some folk who have bought these fish as aquarium specimens, only to find that they have consumed all the other occupants in the tank within days. In fact one of my redtails came from such a source.

So as a general warning to all fish fanciers - do not buy these fish unless you have a very large pond to put them in and also a never ending supply of food.

If you want to see some bigger ones - come on over to my place - we might catch one for you. :thumb:

Talking of Alligator Gar 8)

This fella was pulled out the other day - 12.2kg

Considering he went in at 1.8 Kg in May last year this equals a growth rate of approx 0.65kg / month.

Amazing what a diet of Pla Nin (Nile Tilapia) can do :)

Had this photo sent to me by a happy customer.

Leo from Sweden visited us on 23 October and caught this fine young Amazon Redtail - on BREAD

These fellas usually go for the more carnal stuff!

Anyway - the interesting thing, is that this specimen is one of the younger batch introduced during the summer, and my guess is that he has almost doubled in size.

The fish that is - Not Leo.

We had a very nice sunday afternoon at the fishing lodge, myself and 14 year old stepson opted to fish the lower lake package as the thought of catching a large predatory fish would make my day.

I had the first bight of the day and almost caught a 2kg Pacu but on the third attempt at landing the Pacu bit through the line.............

Image

My stepson then had a fantastic knock on his rod and then was into some great sport with what turned out to be 4.5 kg cat fish

Image

The staff then encouraged my wife to have a go on the top lake almost strait away she hooked up with a 10 kg carp but it was to strong for her so she passed the rod to stepson but trying to hard to real it in and not play it first said carp broke off.

Image

I then decided to hire two more rods and fish both lakes at the same time and this paid great dividens i caught 3 catfish the wife had a Rohu Carp and something else the nipper hade 4 catfish i think a Rohu and some Nin at one point we where running in between the two lakes for two hours of non stop excitement, the potential was there to catch a lot more as many did break off down to our inexperiance, here's some more pics check out the wife giving one fish a kiss i think she has been watching to many fishing programs on Sky tv................

The staff all thou limited english were experianced and on the ball and worked bloody hard for us all afternoon, they new i wanted to catch a red tail so without me knowing they set another rod up around the back of the lower lake , next thing they shouted on me to come quickly they had managed to get a bight from a red tail but with my inexperiance it broke off.

This afternoon has been the high light of my holiday i will recommend this all day long as a good family day out we also had another friend with us and she was quite happy to sit in a deck chair with a good book, the gentle breeze and the wind chimes good food and ice cold beer makes for a very nice day.

I will say a very big thankyou to the staff and the two staff that helped us all afternoon were well worth of 150 baht tip each.

If i can sum this up in a few words............"I recon we had more rod action than the saturday night down the Bintabaht"

Kendo.

Looks like you had a great time Kendo - and thanks for the write up and photos.

Sad that you did not manage a cuddle from a Red Tail :(

Just back from smelly Delhi and my baitman has passed these two piccies of Arapaima - taken whilst I was away.

'Arry has been attention grabbing again and now weighs in at 40 kg. 8)

Image

Meanwhile one of his 'little brothers' who entered the ponds at 1.8kg six months ago, is now at 13kg

Image

Also the Redtails are now reaching 16.5kg - sadly no photo.

So if any of you folks come on over for the HHAD meet and just observe the ponds for probably no more than 5 minutes you will for sure spot 'Arry and / or one of his brothers.

As for catching - then that's for you to try

As none of the HHAD folks managed to get a Redtail during Saturday's meet - (Hardly surprising considering the amount of alcohol being consumed  )

- I thought that I would just post this close up piccie taken last week. One of two caught by this guest in one day.

Image

Just shows the stunning nature of these beautiful creatures.

So - for those who came on Saturday - but never saw or conquered...... 8)

That's a great idea Terry. Casual atmosphere in the countryside, away from all the traffic and craziness, and no expensive set menu where you rarely get your money's worth.

Hopefully pointy hats and noise makers are not mandatory either.

Maybe consider 'the first fish of the New Year' competition as well. Baitless hooks to make it interesting.

If I were in residence, I'd be there. :thumb: Pete
