Jellied eels, now that IS a London thing, although I am not a Londoner I remember a famous stall selling them in the East end under the name of Tubby Isaacs. I was also taken to a Pie mash and green liquor sauce shop. Any of those memories from you Londoners?

Jellied eels, definitely a 'love it-hate it' thing. I hope Bill has a big bucket of ice to stop the jelly melting?

Those pie shops were actually pie and eel shops! My parents preferred eels to the pies with mash and 'licker' (a type of parsley sauce). As a kid, I was fascinated by the chopped up eels still doing their thing in buckets in one of the many such shops that existed in Fulham then.

The main dish sold is pie and mash — a minced beef pie and mashed potato. It is common for the mashed potato to be spread around one side of the plate and for a type of parsley sauce called liquor (although it is non-alcoholic) to be added. Liquor traditionally has a green colour which is not from food colouring but the parsley. It is also traditionally made using the water kept from the preparation of the stewed eels.

Randy, I use the word 'licker' to emphasise how it was/is pronounced, or should be, rather than the after meal drink of the same name.

In due course, after mum and dad had evolved to start enjoying the delights of the local berni inn, they learnt the other meaning of the word. To her dying day, a treat for my mum was a contrioue(?) coffee. On the menu, that came under the heading of 'liqour'.

Nowt to be! It's just one of those things that has stuck in my mind. These ex-east London migrating west real cokneyish types getting their tongue around liqour, as in liqouuuur, just has no ring of truth about it.

One of my cousins married into a family that had a couple of these places and had shellfish stalls. Only wedding I've been to where there was unlimited jellied eels, cockles, muscles, whelks, prawns and the like!

At Wimbledon Market (now), the missus and I like to buy a half pint of cockles for 2 pounds! I even bought winkles for her to try. I was surprised she wan't amused. The guy selling them said they were snails! Well sort of. But memories for me are my dad having a pint of the things and me a half pint, I used to get rid of the eye, shell them, soak them in vinegar and make a winkle sandwich! Chewy.

I like most shellfish but can't bring myself to finish an oyster. Its like eating part of an old car tyre or the sole of your shoe.
You just chew and chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew chew, and then spit the bloody thing out. Can't see the point myself... :?

Randy you just swallow the oysters the whole not chew them. A favorite way to have them now is in Shooters.
Vodka or tequila shooters are the favorite ones I have seen people drinking in the pubs around the city.
All decent bars, night clubs or Cocktail Lounges serve them

I'd rather insert a medium sized jack fruit up my rectum! Things that look like big boogers are not ment to be eaten. Whole or otherwise...
