hua hin golf gossip
Banyan, great and what would be the cost of a round of golf there for the ordinary Joe? Appreciate any information. Thanks.

thanks PET for the information on Banyan.
It looks I have to wait for another year's golf festival and hope that Banyan is included!

Hi guys,
Played Royal Ratchaburi last Wednesday. Baht 650 including caddy on production of HHGS card.
Did not play well but can not blame the course as in my opinion it is in better condition than any course around HH. The layout is great and is a real challenge. Only thing I could fault with the course is the sand in the bunkers, very hard and gritty.
Well worth the trip from HH.

Dragon Hills is also well worth a visit. It is challenging and an excellent layout.
Currently green fees on Wednesday and Thursday are Bht250 and caddy fee Bht200. There is also a very low price to stay in their good hotel for one night and green and caddy fees for the two days( Wed & Thurs) at an all inclusive cost of around Bht1,250

I remember Royal Ratchaburi and Dragon Hills from years ago. Great courses.
Do they get busy at weekends?
I think there may be two courses in Ratchaburi. The Royal one I remember, but someone told me there was another one - maybe on a military base? Is that correct? If so, it's also meant to be good.
And I missed golf practice this morning!!

What about a list of golf courses for 'newbies' who don't want to spend 3 grand to lose all their balls and be pressured by people wanting to play through. Criteria for learning or 'newbie' courses should be:
1) Well priced - under a grand for a round.
2) Quiet - no queues of Scandinavians in day-glow fluorescent pants.
3) Easy - no 700 yard par fives or lake Michigans to shoot over.
4) Accessible - Within an hours drive of Hua Hin.
5) Optional - you can choose if you want a caddy, cart and the rest.
Most newbies suffer from lack of confidence so all of these factors will make the introduction to playing on real courses so much smoother. I would imagine there are a fair few military courses around that fit this description, someone else mentioned the front nine at Milford, and then there is that little spot down in Dolphin Bay.

Played last week at the army course just before Pranburi ( Tanarat I think its called )..Cost was 620 baht including caddy but I don't think I ever played a course in such a bad condition. There was no definition between rough and fairway and it felt like we were playing in a field. In saying that the actual layout of the course was superb and with a bit of money spent on it it would be fabulous. Take plenty of balls if you are going to play cause you'll hit some down the middle and never see them again...
Tthere no comparison between Panurangsi and Fort Tanarat at Pranburi. Panurangsi is a proper course on the Thai Army Engineers Regional Base hence the maintenance really good. Last time I played green fee was Baht 400 plus caddy, also the restaurant and drinks stops are all at normal Thai prices.
Best to play in the mornings as the course gets really busy in the afternoons with military personnel who all seem to want to play with their mates in 5 and 6 balls.
There is another course at Ratchaburi. Woo Castle formally Ratchburi Country Club. Never played it but understand that it is operated by a Korean consortium, least said the better.
