Brit - Retirement Visa Process & Pension Proof

Post by MrPlum »

I am due to renew my annual retirement visa on Saturday in HH.

Couple of Q's...

1. Is it closed on Saturday? If so, is Monday ok and any penalty? What if it's Tuesday (waiting for mail)?

2. The letter from the Gov, proving my pension, will arrive late, so I went to the British Embassy in BKK and asked for a standard letter confirming pension from them, using last 6 months bank statements, which they accepted.COST 2448 THB plus 1440 THB for official photocopy of Passport (Just in case).

3. The Embassy keep my passport overnight and will post with standard letter, using EMS, the next day. Should be here by Friday or Monday.

4. Is there a best time to visit the HH immigration office (I know... 'when it's open') or doesn't it matter?

Thanks. Have thought about it myself but have not had to wait on the couple of occasions I have been previously.

Embassy letter arrived just after my previous post. Cocked up by not including the proof of pension letter. So the week's grace may be needed.

I'd be very careful about the 7 day grace period. You do get that for 90 day reporting, but this is an annual renewal. The OP could quite easily lose the original visa he's working off and have to start all over again by getting another Non O. He will technically be on overstay as well.
I'd go up there tomorrow, explain the situation and Imm might give a further 7 day extension to get the paperwork in order. If they do, they might want 1,900 Baht for it, which is a small price to pay when the alternative is losing everything, visa wise, and paying a fine - 500 Baht a day. Take along the bank statements that you already have and the receipt from The Embassy and throw yourself on their mercy. Good luck.

You've posted as I was. I don't understand the two letters. If you've got The Embassy letter and bank statements, that will probably suffice - won't it?
Either way, take the letter and everything else and if Imm cause a fuss, just try and point out that it's not your mistake and you've got everything else you need.
It would be worth while asking them when you can apply for renewals. I think you'll find you can do so at any time up to a month before the previous extension expires. This is to allow time to get any paperwork that is missing - the situation that you unfortunately find yourself in now.
Let us know how you get on.

visas

Post by heretostay »

there is no grace period after your visa runs out, you go straight onto overstay. if you go over on your 90 day the fine now is 2000 baht. i went yesterday exactly on the 90 day limit. got told it almost cost me 2k. and would have to start again for my visa as it would be cancelled.

small gift and everything was A ok.
Hua Hin Today - Hanoi tomorrow !!!
Heretostay but immigration/ inflation made me go away!!!!

heretostay,
If I've understood your post correctly, it seems HH are trying it on again.
You've clarified getting another annual extension before the current one expires and that was impressed on the OP yesterday.
What does surprise me is that you were told that you'd have been fined and lost the original visa if you'd done your 90 day report a day late.
From Imm's website, this is clearly not the case:
http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en ... age=90days
You can report either 7 days before or 7 days after the due date.
Anyone who is late better be armed with the link

Lomu thats exactely as i understood it
I renewed my retirement visa on wednesday absolutely no problem at all (exactlely as it has been EVERY time) because
1. I knew my due date and got all the paperwork (letter from embassy and photocopies) ready a week before (started sorting it a month before)
2. I went in 2 days before my due date just in case i was required to show something new
3. I was polite, Respectfull and did exactely as I was asked
The ONLY time i got it wrong was when i got the dates mixed up 11 days overstay fine zero envelope zero

My passport expires in Jan 09 no problem i will 90 day report on 1 sep and then renew my passport and a few days before the due date i will go and as the immigration guy said transfer the visa to the new passport and carry on for another 10 years
Most of the problems people seem to have stem from them TELLING the imm off he knows better (heard it twice in one hour) , Leaving everything too late and going with incomplete paperwork, getting angry that the imm off is not going to play the applicants game

I have had zero problems with immigration i dont see the problems they have always been very helpfull to me

How long is the letter from the Embassy, confirming the pension, valid for presentation to Immigration Dept?

My renewal is due in January but can I get the letter say 3 months months before this date?

PET,
I don't think there's any hard and fast rule, but I wouldn't be wanting to get it 3 months prior to application.
I'm sure Imm will want to see it signed off by The Embassy as close as possible to application date. I've always thought a week before would be OK, but that's just my own opinion.
I'll be getting one in a few months and it's my intention to apply for the retirement extension within a day or two of getting back to HH from BKK.

Wrap-up

Post by MrPlum »

Ok. I got the letter from the Embassy on Sat (Immigration closed) so was a day overdue. No problem with this. Not even mentioned, although a gentleman from me was getting irate since he was also a day late and was fined 800 THB.

I had forgotten I needed a photo which they do quickly next door. The letter from the bank only stipulated my balance on Friday and not that I had it in the account for 3 months so I took my bank book which they copied for their records.

The office was packed, A minibus from Phetburi pitched up full of teachers.. nevertheless it was still only an hour and a qtr all told. 1900 THB.

Pension letter from my provider also arrived too late. The letter from the Embassy was obviously enough. The Embassy accepted bank statements as evidence.

All in all, better than I expected. Except for the road in, which is dire.
