Great service at immigration - transferring visa to new passport

Post by Johnson147 »

I went yesterday after collecting a brand new passport in Bangkok as my pages were all used. Hua hin immigration transferred the visa stamp over for 500THB.was a very easy process. Just posting in case anyone else needs a similar service going forward.

Of course it is, they're scamming you out of 500 baht doing something that used to be free of charge.

And if I remember I had to copy all pages of my old passport, so you paid 500 baht + copies. That's not a great service.
Rip off.

No didn't need to copy any pages. Just took old passport and they transferred stamp. I was happy with 500 anyhow.

Isn't this the service where you need a letter from the originating embassy to prove the passport is genuine? Surprised nobody has mentioned this.

Is it? I don't remember in what thread "letters" were discussed? Seems odd though as they are sitting there comparing old to new, and immigration offices have chip readers these days, so there is zero chance of identity info changing. I did mine in Rayong, but back in 2012 so perhaps before the time letters were demanded. Pete

When I had to transfer from old to new passport, I did at the time of my year visa, so I didn't have to pay 500, but they requested copy of all pages. Nothing about any letter.

I found this on the net:
Thai Immigration Office now requires Verification Letter issued by Home Country Embassies/Consulates to process Thai Visa transfer for foreign nationals who change passport

With immediate effect, all foreign nationals and family members who have obtained Thai Visa (either Non-Immigration Visa or Tourist Visa) must request for a Verification Letter from their Home Country Embassies / Consulates when they change new passports. This verification letter is required by Thai Immigration Office during the process of Thai Visa transfer from old to new passports.

The verification letter should indicate old passport number, new passport number and reasons for changing passport.

Please note that the above new requirement was verbally announced by Thai Immigration Officer and there is no written law / regulation provided for this matter.
This could be just another statement from one guy who thinks he has the authority. Similar to all those extra social questions that were being asked at some offices.

I thought we had a thread on here. Certainly that passport service in Pattaya provides the letter now.

I believe the need for the letter only applies if you get your new passport in Thailand. I renewed my British passport just over a year ago when I was temporarily working in Abu Dhabi and renewed the passport using the UAE visa agents nominated by the British Embassy. When I left Abu Dhabi I made sure I had a UAE exit stamp in my new passport and got an entry stamp on arrival in Bangkok. Although I then had to go to Immigration (in Tha Yang) to get my visa transferred into the new passport (I recollect that I also had to pay 500 Baht), I didn’t need any confirmation letter.

But the OP did get his new passport in Thailand and he doesn't mention any verification letter.

Yes I had a letter as the passport was collected in Bangkok. They actually had the same letters to hand out at hua hin immigration also but when you collect your passport in BKK you do get given the letter

The original story was that you had to get verification from the British Embassy. Is this the same letter that comes with the passport and 'They actually had the same letters to hand out at hua hin immigration' as that doesn't sound like a verification. I'm a little confused!
