UK Passports for children

Post by Terry »

Sorry folks but I have tried the search functions and can't get what I want.

So

Can anyone give me useful guidance on how to get UK Passports for my two sons. I'm a UK citizen and my wife is Thai. They HAVE Thai passports and used them often enough, but they may be going to UK next April - and/or visiting Europe - so maybe a UK passport could save all the visa hastle.

I understand that whilst the British Embassy Consular section in Bangkok does not renew passports any more, they can issue new ones...............

Tried finding their opening times on line without too much success.

Thanks for any good advice.

As far as opening times are concerned, I'm pretty sure they're 8.30-11.00. That's for submissions. Collections from 2-3pm.
Can't help you with the passports.
EDIT Just to re-emphsise. I did my income letter recently and to get into the Embassy between 2-3pm, I needed to show the receipt I'd got that morning. Ie, you can't "start anything off" in the afternoons.

Presumably you obtained a British birth certificate for them when they were born? This goes back 6 years, but my brother in law got his daughters birth registered at the British Embassy in Bangkok and passport issued by them.

Has anything changed recently regarding the requirements when applying for a UK passport for my newborn here in Hua Hin?
Also as I'm not married I belive that my child cannot take my name as I'm not seen as the legal father. If this is correct can I still put the babies full English name on the passport application? Is there still a process to register the birth at the embassy in BKK?
Thanks.

I don't know the full details but my brother in law became a father about 8 years ago but was not married to his Thai partner, but got his daughter a birth certificate registered in his name and obtained a UK passport for her from the British Embassy in Bangkok - hopefully nothing has changed over the succeeding years

Just got a birth certificate for my new born daughter, mother is my girlfriend only, my name is on the birth certificate. Also got a signed letter from the hospital citing my name as father. I will register my child shortly and then get a British passport.

Which hospital was your daughter born in?

Just seen this. Just confirming there is no problem putting your family name on the birth certificate even if not married. My 4 months old daughter has my surname and I have just applied for a Thai passport, no problems at all. Child born in Khon Kaen and Thai passport authorised on Thursday at Chaeng Wattana in Bangkok.

Just for info today I received a call from the VFS Global in Bangkok telling me my daughter's passport is ready for collection. Maybe a record for action as I gave in the application form on the 19th August and today is the 31st (12 days).

For info I am not married to the mother and I did not register the birth prior to applying for her UK passport.

Please note that they not only require a colour copy of every original document in the list (Thai and UK) they do indeed require a colour copy of every page of the UK passport of the parent and a colour copy of every passport page of the child's Thai passport if they have one. They only required colour copies of the ID pages of the girlfriend's (mother) passport. I had read on some forums you only need the UK (father's) entire copied passport but I found out to my cost it is also copies of the child's Thai passport. Like an idiot I also only did b/w copies of the Tabien Baan books.

In the UK passport office b/w copies are 3 baht and colour copies are 25 baht. Of course not much needs to be in b/w.

I asked the security who suggested using the offices on the ground floor for copying. Found a place that offered colour copies for 10 baht a page but also met a guy who wanted 20 baht. Of course with the extra pages I needed it came to 370 baht (37 pages).

Service in the actual passport office was excellent and they were professional and helpful.

The main word to remember when preparing documents is obviously 'colour'.

I am very happy, we can now go ahead and apply for my girlfriend's UK visa for our trip in December, much earlier than I expected. She has been twice before.

DD,

Did you have any problems with the email address when trying to book your appointment in BKK to submit your application? I don't know if I am doing anything wrong but every time I send an email with my 3 dates as per the instructons, all I'm getting back is an automated reply informing me to send an email via the same email I'm actually using!

Thanks.

No, not at all.

I must admit supplying 3 dates without seeing an expected availability table was odd but I received an email a couple of hours after requesting dates.

My dates were for 10 days ahead of the email sent date.
