The Chicken Bone Man

Post by Big Boy »

My son and I had what has to go down as our weirdest experience in Thailand so far last night.

Our eldest dog is unable to manage long beach walks any more, so we take then to a bit of waste ground not too far from our house. It's a place occupied by many Soi dogs as that's a place where people feed them. The Soi dogs are no match for our 3, and they soon chase the resident dogs off (no violence, just a bit of barking). We take great care to ensure our dogs don't eat the food left for the other dogs.

Last night, I reversed my truck onto the waste ground, and there was another guy already there, scavenging the Soi dog's food, in particular the chicken bones. He was Thai, but my son understands. He told my son that he knew the food was put there for the dogs, but it was too good for them, and he was having a feast.

We let our dogs have their usual walk around the area, we loaded them back into the truck, and left. The Thai guy was still enjoying his feast.

It's been hard to get this out of my mind. He had a motorcycle, so obviously had money. I just don't know what to think. He really seemed to be enjoying it. Should I have felt sorry for him, and given him a few Baht to get a proper meal? He seemed quite normal in his manner, he wasn't dressed badly, and didn't seem to have a mental disorder. He wasn't drunk or on drugs as far as I could tell. He was simply eating out, and enjoying his meal.

I am really at a loss. I've seen matlots in Plymouth trying to shock people by sifting through somebody's sick and eating the carrots, but this was totally different.

We're off to the same spot again in a few minutes, I'll report back if he's there again.

When my mom was eating limburger cheese she used to say, “don’t knock it if you havn’t tried it” - but get there first for best choices.

That reminded me of a particular show of friendship when coming back after a run ashore in Guz. One matelot puked along with his denture. "I'm not putting them back in my mouth." he says. So his mate pissed on them and his mate was quite happy to put them back in his mouth then.
True friendship!

He might have a hidden disability BB you never know or he might get some bizarre thrill out of a free lunch from other people's generosity.

I was in KFC in Silom once when a guy sat outside would wait for people to leave, then come in and help himself to whatever they had left behind. This seemed to be accepted, but it freaked me out watching him come and go when I was eating. Very uncomfortable and there was nothing out of the ordinary about him.

Out in the countryside I've seen people many times sitting by the side of a road, by a bridge, or under a tree picking small morsels off the ground and eating it. I think that, and the case and the chicken bone man, there are some mental issues in play.

Similar to the local guy near me who walks down the streets stark naked smiling at cars passing by. He's taken in by the police routinely, released, and back at it again in a few days. I guess they'll wait until he does something worse until they commit him to some institution. Pete

He might have poisoned himself or have been eaten by a pack of soi dogs.
