Throughout Asia the dog meat trade is flourishing. In particular the town of Tha Rae in Sakon Nakhorn, north east Thailand has become a center for the export of dogs through Laos and into Vietnam. Dogs are collected in exchanged for a bucket in villages throughout Thailand and then brought to Ta Rae. In Ta Rae the dogs are separated into grades. The best grade are shipped to Vietnam the rest are slaughtered and eaten locally. Thousands of dogs are slaughtered and shipped across the Mae Kong river every month. The business is worth almost as much as the drug trade and this business is legal because Thailand has no animal protection laws for the welfare of domestic animals. We are creating a Hell on Earth for mans best friend.
Yes. There was an article some time ago about dogs being rounded up for sale in the meat markets in the north. The Thais assure me that it does go on.
Eating rats is quite common, cow's placenta (raw), bile, bats etc, so I shouldn't think dogs would be a problem.

Yes HHT

My wife took delivery of a couple of buckets now and again in our (her) house in Isaan.

It happens and is rife in Isaan and most of SE Asia.

In 'head in the sand' Hua Hin it cannot possibly happen  . How many Thais from Isaan work in HH? Think on fellow readers the next time you eat your street noodles. Do you know what stock is added for flavour to the noodle caldron. My guess is rat, dog, pork, snake and maybe chicken. Who cares? Still tastes good :)

And us Brits complain about a bit of horse meat...

I'm not really bothered as long as I don't know what it is. Food's food. Would never willingly eat dog meat mind.

No one can predict what the world will be eating 100 years from now but fast producing animals with multiple offspring per litter will probably be on the menu everywhere rather than domestic cow, sheep etc.

Many articles already about insects and how it's becoming an acceptable high protein, sustainable, low maintenance food source in several countries. I think I read there is even place or two in the US that is doing it based upon the Thai experience. I bet the UK and Europe are serving it somewhere as well. Pete

Yes, the uk has a specialist food place serving bugs. Can't remember the name of it... Read it in a newspaper some time ago.

Eating dog would never bother me, despite being a dog lover (I couldn't go through the slaughter process, but that would be the same for beef, pork, chicken etc). If it was meat on the plate, I'd probably enjoy it as I do any other meat.

It did surprise me in Vietnam earlier this year - we saw less than a dozen dogs in a week. I guess they've already eaten them all.

One funny story, Mrs BB was really scared of being served dog while we were there. On the last day, to make sure she knew what she was eating, she opted for a burger :?

^ :lach: I hope you didn't say anything. I'm surprised someone hasn't come up with a portable pocket size probe/meter that when inserted tells you what it is. Could be complicated though as probably would have to focus on DNA....and cooked DNA at that.

Side note and I think told before. I used to eat steak sandwiches and all other kinds of shredded beef offerings such as stew, soup etc., at a restaurant where I live. Built, owned and operated by Norwegians from day 1. It was revealed that the beef was never beef but Emu. Their thinking was that if advertised what if really was it would put people off. It was and is very nice and more tender than beef, has a beef colour, and has a beef flavour, at least to me. :D Pete

I have no doubt that I have eaten dog meat, not knowingly at the time, but with the places I have worked in China and Korea.........

I have eaten rat in India (knew after the fact), as well as God only know's what they fed us on site.

I have knowingly eaten horse meat in Italy and France - not bad at all.

I am also like many others completely 2-faced. I am an avid meat eater who as an animal lover (with the exception of rats :tsk: ) puts his head in the sand with regards as to how animals are slaughtered/meat is prepared.

Why is eating dog any different to eating beef? (Black) Dogs in Korea are bred for meat (for winter) - dog meat is openly available in many areas in China. The simple fact is that animals we regard as pets or "cute" should not be touched, however "humane" the slaughter is.

There are of course many examples of hideous treatment of animals - in my personal experience, CHINA. In the belief that testosterone tenderises meat, it is common for cats, dogs and smaller animals to be boiled and skinned alive prior to cooking.......... simply because an enourmous amount of testosterone will be produced prior to death. :cuss: :banghead:

The family farm north-east of Bangkok, near the Cambodian border at Aranyapathet, uses Cambo laborers for farm work. Quite regularly they go through the village to buy dogs. The going rate is 500THB for a good-size well-fed dog.
And yes, they eat them.
