In a couple of reports that i have read they are talking of using high speed catamarans (could be fun on a rough bay during the rainy season!!) and yes they were also talking of building piers on both sides

Why are the powers-that-be fuelling this project..? Both Patts & H.H. have tourists from abroad in their resorts spending already...why spend big bucks ferrying us all to & fro...?
IF the ferry port was to be (let's say) north of Cha-Am, then a shuttle service needs to be implemented to H.H.
By the time you've farted around with boats, bags & mini-buses etc..I personally will still opt for the airport buses from Patts/H.H...having my break/meal-stop at Swampy & having a relaxed trip with comfy seat.

IMHO, creating a port anywhere could potentially cause unforseen problems.

Local Example: Before I retired here I used to stay in a house or condo near the Regent Beach Hotel in Baan Kwai. The beach was about 100m wide and had the usual vendors and also restaurants on the adjacent sea wall.

Arrived at the house about 8 years ago to find hat two conrete breakwaters/piers had been built parallel to the beach just to the south of Baan Kwai (a Royal Project I was told).

The result was that most of the time there is now NO beach at all. It is sometimes passable in a metre of water - dangerous for children obvoiusly! Tourists cannot use the beach to access the restaurants - and the vendors are history.

The Bottom Line: Can anyone really predict the knock-on effect of new structures being built into the sea?

The siting of any pier/structure would certainly need to be considered very carefully considering the seasonal tides and strong currents, if they intend to run a regular service during the whole day and seasons. During the rainy season we have all seen the tides, waves and currents. These CM apparently have a top speed of 85kph

Transport Minister visits Pattaya - Hua Hin ferry pier construction site

Transport Minister Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong yesterday visited the construction site of the Pattaya - Huahin ferry pier.

He disclosed that the Marine Department has been given two months to conduct a feasibility study of the project to construct ferry piers in Chonburi province’s Pattaya municipality and Si Racha district, as well as a ferry garage in Samut Prakarn province.

The Ministry of Transport is planning to construct a railway connecting Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon. The railway would connect with the new ferry piers, integrating different modes of transportation.

ACM Prajin said the auction for the 180 km Bangkok - Hua Hin high-speed railway project would be held at the end of this year. Initially, the auction would be available for Thai investors only. He speculated the project would begin construction in the second quarter of next year and be completed within 2-3 years.

The Transport Minister also unveiled a plan to develop Petchaburi province as a gateway city to the South, saying the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning and the Department of Highways have been assigned to construct more roads and motorways linking the area to other regions.

They should get a couple of these things! No messing about with ferry piers, just a wide expanse of concrete - or even just a flat beach.

I worked at Dover Hoverport for a couple of years in the early 90s. Boring place to work from my point of view, but a fantastic sight watching these monsters coming up the pad towards you. And the noise was unbelievable! They could cope with some pretty rough weather and get you across the Channel in 30 minutes

Ancient history now, sadly - killed off by the Channel Tunnel. I believe they've turned it into a lorry park... :(
This is the way

Pattaya to Hua Hin Ferry Plans revived and preparing for 2016 launch
The NCPO (National Council for Peace and Order) are reviving a ferry service between Pattaya and Hua Hin which will drastically reduce travel times between both seaside resorts and potentially improve tourism numbers at both locations.

Previous ferry services running between Pattaya and Hua Hin have not been popular but the current Government are determined to revive the service and are in the process of creating a new Ferry Port at the Bali Hai Port.

Currently the only option to travel between the East and West Coast of the Gulf of Thailand is via road and the journey can take up to 6 hours. The new Ferry service will take between 1 1/2 and 2 hours and is promised to be much cheaper than previous failed services.

212 Million Baht is being pumped into the new project and the Ministry of Transport and NCPO are making regular trips to Pattaya to ensure the local authorities are moving ahead with the plans, so the service can begin in early 2016, possibly in-time for the post-New Year high-season months, assuming there will be no unforeseen delays in construction of the new ferry port.

Transport Ministry plans to build Bt1-billion ferry ports
The Transport Ministry plans to build ferry ports worth about Bt1 billion in the eastern coast to help boost tourism and transport.
Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said that the prime locations are Laem Bali Hai in Pattaya and the Khuk Samet Pier in Chon Buri province.

The project will cost about Bt1 billion, Prajin said, and he will forward the project to the National Council for Peace and Order for approval.

The ports will have a railway connecting to Pattaya, and the capacity to handle a large influx of tourists.

ACM Prajin added that additional surveys will be conducted for another two suitable locations in the western coast at Cha-Am district of Phetchaburi province and Pranburi district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Initially, the project is likely to be a public private partnership campaign.

Obviously you have never taken a taxi and arrived on a Friday or Saturday night/evening in Pattaya, or a holiday weekend. I have taken the Hua Hin/Pattaya trip dozens of times in a taxi and the shortest is 3.5 hours (and that's always coming back to Hua Hin) but many times it has taken 6 hours due to traffic getting into Pattaya. What time you leave has everything to do with it....

There has been silence in the news about this project for almost a year now. Has anyone heard anything? Is there REALLY a ferry terminal being built on the Hua Hin side? This subject reminds me of the movie "Groundhog Day", life repeating itself over and over again. This ferry venture is on it's third, maybe fourth reincarnation now. Pete

Well the breakwater is just about finished and I guess that's the hard bit to build! God knows what they are going to do about the increase in traffic it will cause.

That's just harbour improvements. Not a ferry port.
