Where not to live in Bangkok?

Post by LaughTilIDie »

I have decided that I am moving to Bangkok in the Spring of 15. I have a couple of people looking for an apartment for me but not knowing much about Bangkok, other than it is possibly a disease, where not to live. Anywhere near public transport works for me. Feel free to move this if I dumped it in the wrong place.

We lived in Mung Tong Thani and the Popular Condominums there. It is next door to the Impact Exhibition hall center and close to the large government complex on Chang Wattana. Has undergone some big changes lately with lots of new shops and things being upgraded. Rentals there are around 4,000 baht for a one bedroom (largest available) and transportation is good to anywhere in Bangkok. Definitely on the economy side of the scale but with the Impact exhibition center next door there are some interesting shows to go to.

where do you need to get to everyday

if you tell us where your office/work location is then it will be easier.

I like Bangkapi and Rangsit,

plenty of western food but not many tourists or sexpats

plenty of nice 18-24 girls that attend university but not rich.

I am retiring so I have no place I need to go. Just looking for a place that is safe, decent night life and affordable on 65000 Baht income.

To live in Bangkok takes a certain type of character. One that likes the hustle and bustle of city life, the pollution, the indifference towards you as a foreigner... The craziness of the place.

I live on the outskirts of BKK and only venture into BKK when there's no choice not too. This is probably about twice a year. Other people I know can't get enough of the place. They absolutely love it in Bangkok...

It's not for me. All depends on the type of person you are. If it were me, I'd get a place near Wongwianyai (the furthest away bts from the center of BKK on the south end) so you are still far enough away from it but can jump on the bts and get wherever in BKK you need to be in under an hour. It's right by Rama 2 so you've got all you need there; Tops supermarket, Central, furniture places, Big C, Tesco Lotus...

Depends what kind of environment you'd prefer to be in.

what sort of night life

do you mean girlie bars
or bars with mixed groups watching music and sport

You can get some real bargains if you avoid condos near bts stations,

you can get 2 bedroom 60sqm in Ramkhamaeng for 15000, where the same place next to a BTS station central bkk would probably be 25-40k

Isn't Bangcock :) made up of about a 100 districts or towns? Don't want to be, as we call is downtown or city center. And that was a joke about being a disease. I haven't seen much other than from a taxi or bus but what I did see doesn't look bad.

I am definitely a character. Lived in LA as a kid I hacked my lungs out when I was only 10 every morning walking to school and Bangkok doesn't hold a candle to LA in smog. I am indifferent to foreigners here until I get to know them and I will expect to be treated the same no matter what foreign country I move. Hell I was treated as an downright outcast back in the 60's when I was in Canada and we all spoke the same language.

Hell yes I mean girlie bars LOL. A few time a week with a variety. I enjoy live entertainment, not strippers, and sports. Maybe I'll take up cricket.

I have found several condos online for less than 10000 some with a real kitchen. If I wanted real cheap I would be looking in Udon or Chiang Mai. I found places for less than 5000 but who wants to live in the middle of nowhere, certainly not me.

So maybe what I should be asking is where should I look in Bangkok?

If you want 'cheap', anywhere in Thailand will suit your needs. When I say 'cheap' it's not a compliment. Cheap as in poor quality is what I mean.

The photos I saw of the condos looked decent and yes I know they are just pictures. I was hoping for some direction as to a general area to look. I am coming in January to search and start renting. Will probably be moving in April.

It's really very much the same as the advise folks give you about Hua Hin. Go there and look around, ask around, then you will find what you like. I lived in Bangkok for 13 years but that was a long time ago (1989-2002) and I more or less liked every place where I stayed (Asoke-Din Daeng, Soi Saint Luis 3, Soi Suanphlu, Ekkamai Soi 21, Sukhumvit Soi 1, Sukhumvit Soi 23.) I miss them all.
