Does your dog bite?

Post by Gregjam »

Today while out cycling I was bitten (I would call it nipped but bitten is more easily understood) by a dog. As I tend to cycle on smaller roads, tracks and trails I am familiar with dogs chasing after me barking and have never in the last two years been bitten. On this occasion it was a small "nip" but enough to draw blood. I did go to see the owner who was very apologetic and thought that the dog never bites. I was calm and showed that the dog does bite. Unfortunately I was unable to ascertain if the dog had been vaccinated so am now starting on a course of anti-rabies jabs which is probably a good idea given my cycling habits.

What I would like to draw peoples attention to is how aware are they of their dogs propensity to bite passing strangers including a playful nip. Are dog owners putting their pets in danger by letting them run free and not being aware of their behaviour.

My concern is not only for the person being chased but also the dogs. When you hear your dog cry out after chasing a cyclist or motorcyclist is this because they have been at the receiving end of a well aimed iron rod? When your pet is poisoned by some meat laced with rat killer left on the roadside who is to blame?

The latter has happened in the past to dogs my wife was caring for most likely due to their behaviour. I am well aware my gentle rant will have little effect but if it helps prevent one person or pet avoid getting hurt it is worth it.

Next time your dog is out and barking at passers by are you sure either will not get hurt!

It's a serious matter but the title of your post reminds me of Peter Sellers:

Clouseau: “Does your dog bite?”
Hotel Clerk: “No.”
Clouseau: [bowing down to pet the dog] “Nice doggie”. [Dog barks and bites Clouseau in the hand]
Clouseau: “I thought you said your dog did not bite!”
Hotel Clerk: “That is not my dog.”

We have 3 dogs.

1 will bite, and we keep her very well controlled. Quite docile most of the time, but if she thinks any of us or the other 2 dogs are being threatened, I'm really glad she's got my back. Great fun walking her on the beach during the day. Thais don't see a dog, they see a tiger coming towards them, and many literally run away, even though I keep her on a short leash in public.

1 is just afraid of the human race. Would she bite? Probably under the right/wrong circumstances. She avoids human contact, so wouldn't be in a position to bite.

1 just can't bite, my wife has to cut his food up really small. He is a small dog, but thinks he's Scrappy Doo. He is afraid of nothing, and doesn't think twice about chasing 6 soi dogs - I'll be honest, I don't know how he gets away with it. He's the same with beach dogs at night - they all back down. He is a real case of bark being worse than his bite.

All 3 have their vaccinations.
