1.3bn baht Suvarnabhumi expansion planned

Post by buksida »

The Airports of Thailand will proceed with the design of Suvarnabhumi airport’s second phase at a cost of 1.3 billion baht next month.

Construction will be carried out from August and when work is complete, the airport is expected to have a capacity that can accommodate up to 65 million passengers a year, said president Makin Petplai.

Referring to the construction bidding, the first part will cover the concourse building, 28 parking bays and exit doors, costing 40 billion baht in total, he said.

The second part is the construction of the eastern terminal, costing 7 billion baht, and the third part covers a 2.6-billion-baht public utility system.

Another 1.2 billion baht will be earmarked for consultants and work supervision, he said.

The AoT will find ways to raise funds for the expansion, including loans and fundraising, he said.

I don't see any mention of additional runways. I hope that idea is in there somewhere. Pete

The report says that the work will be completed by the end of the third qtr this year, so no way can they build another runway.

A 3rd runway was planned for completion in 2018 but I have heard nothing of late to say that it had moved past the planning stages.

In Thailand, Airports of Thailand (AoT) is absorbed with the second stage of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, which embarrassingly opened in Sep-2006 at full capacity. The second phase includes construction of a 216,000sqm terminal building and 28 aircraft parking spaces. The completion date has been brought forward from Mar-2017 to Mar-2016. Phase Two will raise the airport's capacity to 65 million passengers a year. In tandem there are plans for new domestic terminal which will be capable of handling 20 million passengers a year.

The two expansion projects are part of the overall airport enlargement that would see Suvarnabhumi raise its annual passenger handling capacity to 120 million passengers, 85 million international and 35 million domestic passengers by 2024. Anticipated costs are USD2.5 billion. The company has also accelerated development of a third runway in response to increased passenger traffic.

The proposed runway would be classified as a reserve facility, limiting its length to 3000m and avoiding health and environmental impact assessments, but it may be extended to 4000m in the future. The estimated construction cost of the reserve runway is USD321 million, while a full-length runway would cost USD449 million.

Quietly, the city’s other airport, Don Mueang, is creeping back into favour, having been virtually written off at one time. AoT just revealed that in Nov-2013 passenger numbers grew by 24.4% compared to 3.9% at Suvarnabhumi. Reconstruction of the airport's currently disused second terminal is expected to be complete by May-2014 at the latest (brought forward several times from 2016). The terminal will expand the airport's passenger traffic to 27.5 million per annum and Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports collectively are expected to handle a total of 87.5 million passengers per annum by 2016. Total anticipated reconstruction costs at Don Mueang are put at USD615 million.
