Above we have a Jaguar eating a croc. Here we have a snake eating a croc. No video, just stills from the BBC. I had no idea Australia had snakes that large? Pete

Yes, crows and ravens are highly intelligent, as are pelicans, the parrot family and a few others. Evolution? I include pelicans which may surprise some but I used to live on the water near San Francisco and they would land at my house when tangled in fishing line or had some other problem. Once they knew you would help, they would send all their buddies later on. :D Pete

Hrmn, the Birdman of Alcatraz? :rasta:
Crows, or Ravens, must just about be the most intelligent. Growing up on a farm in Australia the crows at times would become a real nuisance. They particulary liked to steal figs from a couple of big trees we had. Go outside the house with a gun and they would be gone in an instant, but do the same with a broom, or anything like it, and they would carry on with stealing and squawking! :guns:

Well the volcano system up in Iceland has started erupting with what is classed as a minor rift eruption. A rift around a kilometer long (imagine the earth's crust unzipping) has opened up and low viscosity lava has been erupting as fountains.

That was an early stage of the eruptions - those fountains are around 60 - 100 m high.

Yesterday the eruption turned a bit more serious as the lava appears to have changed viscosity. The fountains reached up 200m at one point (think a 60 story skyscraper) and there were three low level explosive eruption cycles (more like Effleffeleflefleffffffl a couple of years ago). Thing is as the area is so active scientists could not get equipment near enough to monitor it or take readings.

Now for a reality check. The magma dyke underneath that eruption is 40 km long and may run down to the mantle....and its still widening. Its also linking up two highly dangerous volcanic systems, one of which is Askja. So this may just be the opening chords of a whole season of mother earths fireworks in the land of fire and ice.

Popcorn out....feet up
