Is that correct though because the train line from Samut Sakhon to Samut Songkhram is stand alone. The main line goes inland a bit e.g. Bangkok to Hua Hin trains pass through places such as Ratchaburi.
Yes, mainly because at that time there were not very many bridges across the river in Bangkok, especily from the where the Palace is now.

Despite the last PM promising an end to this debacle by next year, they are now seeking ฿600M to speed work up.

Gantry and concrete segments fatally collapse on Rama II Road

SAMUT SAKHON: Many people were killed and injured when a launching gantry crane and precast concrete segments collapsed on Rama II Road in Muang district of Samut Kakhon early Friday morning.

The collapse happened on Rama II Road at the construction site of the elevated M82 inter-city motorway’s Ekachai-Ban Phaew section at 4.13am on Friday.

According to initial reports, four construction workers died and ten others were injured.

Samut Sakhon governor Naris Niramaiwong said at the site that the incident occurred when the gantry collapsed.

The governor advised motorists to take detours because of heavy traffic congestion in the vicinity.

“We will speed up clearing the area to resume traffic on Rama II Road quickly,” Mr Naris said.

The expressway lanes of Rama II Road were completely closed and some frontage lanes remained open on both sides of the road.

Because the contractors have to pay huge 'back pocket' payments, they have to cut corners.

Speaking to someone who used to be in the building industry. He said he got out of the industry when he was involved in the bidding for work at a university. To win the contract they had to agree to 40% of the bid to be paid to the dean.

I drove to Bkk on Wednesday, and it took me 35 minutes to get past the two adjacent bottlesnecks created, as you pass the collapsed gantry. These have been created to push traffice heading into Bkk onto the service lane, whilst one lane of the normal road is used to take traffic heading out of Bkk. I have to say, that once past these, you make up all of the time lost as the road is empty until the toll before Rama4 bridge (in my case).

So if they remove the temporary road changes, it will be a big help. If not, there's little point.
