Would those of you with Thai families ask them whether they understand the concept of a % increase.

I make that a difference of 9.28% so where does this 0.4% come from? Another criticism of Thai education.
Forgetting the accuracy of the percentages, the biggest issue is that the authorities were supposed to be making a big issue about the measures they were taking to reduce the carnage on the roads - maybe they would be better off leaving things alone?

What is overlooked is the yearly increase in the number of vehicles on the road, plus the number of people that can afford to "drive" them. And the following is not up to date.

Thailand now has more than 37 million registered cars(November 14, 2016)

http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/thaila ... ered-cars/

Altogether 37,268,655 vehicles have been registered until now. These are divided into 20,289,721 motorcycles, 8,146.250 passenger cars, 6,259,806 pick-up trucks, 1,049,749 trucks and 156,089 public transport.

During the January-October period, a total of 2,456,686 vehicles were registered. These are divided into 1,620,901 motorcycles, an increase of 84,281 over the same period last year; 490,124 passenger cars that carry not more than seven people, an increase of 35,854 over the same period last year; and 212,281 pick-up trucks – a drop of 3,631 units from the same period last year.

Question, the little chart you see in the Bangkok post, and also here,is a similar one published in Thai newspapers? I have seen on the Thai TV channels many incidents showing some of the more dramatic crashes, but in the Thai printed media is the same information given regarding a day to day account of what is actually happening over the Songkran period. I am aware of the daily numbers of people killed on Thai roads, but are Thais themselves informed of these numbers.
I guess perhaps they not bothered, that might answer my initial question!!!

I think Thais just accept it as the norm - the same thing happens every year (every day in reality), and will continue to happen while they drive like nutters and the police refuse to patrol the roads.

Songkran death toll climbs to 323 in five days

The accumulated death toll from the first of the so-called seven dangerous days of Songkran has risen to 323, with 3,140 people hospitalised in over 3,000 road accidents across the country, the Road Safety Centre announced on Monday.

Road deaths up by 13.2% over the same five days in 2017. Beats me how they calculate their percentages.
Not quite the 7% reduction that was aimed for!

Songkran death toll rises to 378 in six days

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... n-six-days

The accumulated death toll from road accidents has risen to 378, with 3,575 people hospitalised, in the first six days of the 7-day dangerous period of the Songkran festival, that ends today.

From April 11 to 16, there were a total of 3,418 road accidents nationwide, the Road Safety Centre announced on Tuesday.

On Monday, 49 people were killed and 464 others hospitalised in 425 crashes across the country, said Lt Gen Thanet Kallapruek, director of the army’s directorate of civil affairs, citing a report from the Centre.
Speeding was the leading cause of the road fatalities (28.47%), followed by drink-driving (27.29%), and most crashes involved motorcycles (81.80%), said Lt Gen Thanet.

A total of 176,415 traffic offenders were arrested at 2,013 road checkpoints. Of that number, 49,866 people were not wearing crash helmets and 46,067 people were not carrying a driving licence.

Nakhon Ratchasima recorded the highest accumulated death toll from April 11 to 16, with 19 fatalities. Chiang Mai had the highest number of injuries at 136, and also the highest number of road crashes at 126.

Songkran road death toll up again

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... l-up-again

The accumulated road death toll during the "seven dangerous days" of Songkran jumped to 418 this year, up about 7% on last year.

From April 11-17, there were a total of 3,724 road accidents across the country, claiming 418 lives and injuring 3,897 people, the Road Safety Centre announced on Wednesday.

On April 17 alone, the last of the seven days, 26 people were killed and 336 injured in 307 road crashes nationwide, Deputy Interior Minister Sutee Markboon told a news briefing, citing a report from the Road Safety Centre.

During last year’s Songkran holidays, 390 people died on the roads and 3,808 were injured in 3,690 traffic accidents over the seven days.

Good for a headliner I guess, as 420 over 7 days is about the average of 60 a day, on any given day, give or take. Simply matching the daily average of every day in Thailand.

In 2011 the then-government announced the following ten years as Thailand's 'Decade of Action on Road Safety'.

It declared 2012 as the year of 100 percent helmet use on motorbikes.

In 2015 the Department of Disaster Prevention, which is tasked with road safety in addition to problems like floods and landslides, boldly announced a target of reducing road deaths by 80%.

All in vain.
Nothing changes. Yesterday's figure of 26 helped to make it look a little better. Normally you could add on another 20 or 30 deaths.

The deceased were from poor uneducated families, luckily none from wealthy, military or government families--so no problem.

Another year, another Songkran, more people owning cars, more young inexperienced drivers,
driving drunk, high, or both, and yes texting or getting a selfie, and here the numbers are
up again. Very sad, but I do not expect to see any changes at least for a few more years.

This "7 Deadly Days" thing is a myth. According to the yearly road death figures, then actually it's safer to drive around during these major holiday times than it is to do so normally by about 5-10% due to the police actually being forced into doing their job more actively than usual due to politics.

I suppose as well, there must be a reduction due to the number of people who would have had accidents commuting to work or taking kids to school if it wasn't a holiday.

I totally agree. Every single day in Thailand there are an enormous amount of deaths due to traffic accidents. I guess that the powers that be like to highlight certain times, as it would be too depressing to publish the figures on a daily basis (head in the sand...).
