before moving to Thailand I lived in a small town in "lower Alabama", also known as northwest Florida and it was the stupidest place I've ever lived, incluing rural Korea in the late 50's and outside a village on an island off the coast of Spain in the early 60's.oakdale160 wrote:Cant resist telling this one--

555555, Town Planners!!!
Surely there is no such thing.... Crazy U turns, parking chaos, mad junction layouts and even posts bolted to the middle of the outside lane of Phetkhasem road. I'm just glad we don't have a brewery!

Re: Has Hua Hin Traffic Reached Saturation Point?
Has any one else noticed that if the traffic lights at Soi 76 and Soi 70 were synchronised this would help alleviate the congestion of through traffic along Petchakasem at these two locations?
Somchai: Somsak, are you ready?
Somsak: Yes.
Somchai: Okay on 3, 1 2 3.

The way the BIB mess around with the sequencing of both sets of lights, they wouldn't stay synchronised very long.

An old thread, but very relevant today. Low season, no holidays - has anybody been on Hua Hin's roads today? It's absolute gridlock.

Yeah, I've just got back home from before the airport, north of the town centre and it was really busy heading in.
Don't know why. Are schools back now? Although that shouldn't cause traffic congestion at lunchtime?

Reached their saturation point years ago. Along with no parking.
Luckily, if a tourist and centrally located, or not, all is within walking distance. When visiting, I stayed on RR side of Phetkasem, and didn't even bother going to other side. Nothing of interest for me on that side of hwy.

Thai schools are still closed for another two weeks and due to Public Holiday tomorrow Hua Hin is packed! Full house....

Me too. So, weekenders will just have taken today as well.
Re: Has Hua Hin Traffic Reached Saturation Point?
It might help if the locals learned their way around. I was a totally unneccessary part of this mornings traffic. The wife asked me to take her to a place in Soi 88 and so we came into town on the Pala U road to pick up the neice before Big C. All I was told was Soi 88 and when the niece was in the truck asked where in soi 88 with a blank response. Between Hua Hin school and the railway I asked if I could cut across the hill and join Soi 88 but was told to go to the railway end.
Progress was very slow and eventually as we went along Soi 88 it came out that it was after the courthouse, as it happened the other side of the hill so a completely wasted transit through town.
This was from someone who has lived her all their life and is typical of the help I get when I ask for specific guidance. Many times I am told "before such and such restaurant" which explains why dangerous and unneccessary U turns are common.
Typical, frustrating but another aspect of being here I have got used to. Traffic is bad enough particularly past the chicken rice places but I wonder how many, lke me, end up adding to the problem due to poor instructions and preparation.

Re: Has Hua Hin Traffic Reached Saturation Point?
Clicked on this thinking it was new and discovered I had commented in 2016.......update! Until Blu Port opened, traffic seemed to be flowing much more smoothly downtown.....now it seems not so much. But my big story is when we moved out to Cha Am south in 2007 driving to and from Hua Hin was very pleasant and definitely not busy.
Today, both between HH and Cha Am, but up especially north near the Outlet Mall it's absolutely insane! Looks like about two thirds of the people in Bangkok are trying to escape Godzilla. Every time I go to the Outlet and have to navigate the traffic to and from the nearest u-turn I pray my will is up to date.

From your frustration it does not seem you 'have got used too' ? But I know where you are coming from but one should know where one is going - not so difficult in a small town like HH using well used roads roads.Gregjam wrote: ↑Mon Apr 30, 2018 3:48 pm It might help if the locals learned their way around. Courage is grace under pressure and when circumstances change you change your mind.
Re: Has Hua Hin Traffic Reached Saturation Point?
When I say that I am used to it I mean that I do not react visibly. After many years here I have learnt that is the best practice. It will always cause frustration unfortunately as that is my nature, just something I now let pass quickly as I know that all my attention is needed for driving over here.
Re: Has Hua Hin Traffic Reached Saturation Point?
An old chestnut that I like to bring out of the closet occasionally.
I've been reflecting upon driving in Hua Hin over the last few days. Now, 6 years ago, when I first started driving in Hua Hin, I'd read on this forum that there was no speed limit in Thailand. I even asked the question on the forum, and nobody could give me an answer. So, I used to quite happily drive at 120KPH from the flyover to Bangkok Hospital if conditions permitted, and they often did. I've learnt what the limits are now, and generally don't break it.
I challenge anybody to do that today. Unless late at night, it would be extremely difficult to break the limit along that stretch of road any longer.
