Teaching in Issan

Post by oakdale160 »

Gordon a friend of mine married a Thai lady and started his 3rd family. He built a house in Issan and lives there for 9 months/year. I visited them for a week. He has thrown himself into life there, is fairly good at the local language and he and another English guy, Roger, volunteer at the local primary school and each day one or the other teach 2 English classes. In addition, Gordon runs a session at his house, 2 evenings a week, doing the boring stuff, spelling, punctuation and grammar with his children, Roger's children and 2 boys the sons of a penniless rice farmer neighbour. The childrens' English is very impressive, but there is one funny element. Both Gordon and his friend have what British people call "Very posh accents" and so, of course, all these children, including the rice farmer's children, sound as if they attend the very best British private schools.
