Kao PiTak Municipality School

Post by Noz »

We'll be looking for a Hua Hin middle school (prathom) for my girlfriend's 6 year old daughter (Thai) come next May and wondering if anyone has any firsthand experience of Kao PiTak Municipality School (soi 88), which would be the closest one to where we stay. The girl currently goes to school in the village in Surin so we have no experience of schooling in Hua Hin whatsoever.

Any tips or recommendations appreciated.

Thanks

Nil response from that question, so how about Tesabaan Baan Hua Hin School (at Hua Hin Temple) or Somtawin Thai School near soi 56?

Anyone with any children at either of those?

Thanks Spitfire. I read the fiery thread on the Somtawin English School. Some heated exchanges indeed! I was more interested in any comments on the Somtawin Thai School though.

The Somtawin Thai School in the town is very popular and according to Thai friends is a good school ( I have no personal experience of the Thai side of Somtawin). Grades/Prathom 1 thru 6 all have three classes and all are nearly full averaging 45 pupils per class. It is one of the more expensive private schools in the area with term fees of around 7000 baht I believe. Longer term I think they only go to Grade 9 / Mathayom 3 but you may be looking for High School before then.

You might want to try Somtawin English school, from what I heard from a Thai friend some of the monthly payment arrangements made for those with difficulties paying the full fees work out at less than those of the Somtawin Thai school. At Grade 1 I don't think they have very strict requirements that the child has a good command of English. After all if you pay to send her to the Thai Somtawin, some of your money will be going to the English Somtawin.

Joking aside, as with all schools you are considering, you should contact them, go and have a look round (during class time) and then decide. Get your girlfriend to talk to not only to the principal and the Grade/Prathom 1 (I'm assuming) teachers but to the people who will tell you like it is, the cleaners, the gardeners, security; They will tell you if the school has gangs / drug problems / pervasive bad language, in fact anything non-academic. She might get a more open response without your presence (assuming she is Thai of course).

Common amongst sub 10 year olds in Thailand ?

The school employees will answer any questions giving the answer they perceive you will want to hear even if it means lying

You may want to consider Satukarn (spelling?) which is a little closer to central Hua-Hin. We have both our kids there and they seem very happy. We also did a lot of asking around, and most Thais we spoke to said the school is better than Somtawin (Thai) school. I think it costs 5000 baht per term. Well established school which has just celebrated the 100th birthday. If head from HH towards Cha-am, it's on the right hand side of the road just past the second set of lights. If you do settle on this school, your little one will more than likely be in the same class as my eldest one.

My thanks to both Frank and Takiap for the useful info. Somtawin Thai is the one that I hear recommended most frequently and Satukarn certainly sounds worth considering.

Anyone else with any first hand experience of HH schooling at this level?

My wife's son goes there and has been there since kinder1. He's now in P3. He likes it but if it were up to me, I would have changed him to Salesian School. Main reason being that they offer a better English program there with native speakers for about 10,000bt extra on top of the 4,000bt annual school fee. In fact, this year at Somtawin School, we only paid about 3,500 bt for our son whereas when he was at kinder1 we paid over 5,000bt. The only problem with Salesian School is that it is so over-subscribed that I heard the class sizes are even larger than Somtawin's. Since K1 through to P3 my stepson has only had 2 teachers (Thai) who had good confident English speaking skills.
When I ask him over dinner what he did at school he always just says "worksheets". I ask him when he will start playing musical instruments there (as he's already enrolled at the Yamaha School for piano) and he just says ..."don't know". He has a special interest in mechanics and we even brought stuff to his school to show his teacher so that he could be considered for the annual robot making competition, but so far nothing has happened.
My overall opinion is that Klai Kang Wong School or Salesian School are better for Thai students.

Bigideas, am I understanding you correctly that Salesians is then a total of 14,000 per year? If it is, then that's quite good because we're paying 10,000 per year at Satukarn, and there's no English program. In fact I found it quite ironic when my daughter's teacher commented on her report that my daughter's English needs more work, considering her teacher cannot speak English at all, and frequently asks my daughter to translate :thumb:

You're right about the school near the palace, but I've heard you either need plenty of money, or you need to know the right people to get you kid in there.

Apart from the lack of an English program, we're very happy with Satukarn, and we've only ever heard good reports about it.
