Serena Williams will play Victoria Azarenka

Post by doggie »

Serena Williams will play Victoria Azarenka in an exhibition match in Thailand next month in a clash of the world's top two female players.

The Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand announced on Thursday that the match will be part of the regular invitational event in Hua Hin, a popular holiday destination.

Azarenka has twice played exhibitions matches there, while this will be Williams' first appearance at the event.

The game is in Centinnel park, which is not at the hotel. It's immediately after the bridge that heads towards Pranburi

Between soi 112 and 114, right?

Just bought some tickets -- surprisingly expensive at 1'500 baht a piece. I watched the same invitational 4 years ago (I believe it was), between the other Williams sister and Sharapova, I seem to remember it was dirt cheap. I guess they wised up to their target audience generally being foreigners...

Another event in Hua Hin where the advertising is confusing to most. I'm not sure what, or if there is a connection between the Intercontinental and Centennial Park, but why did they put the location at 'Centennial Park, Intercontinental Hotel' on the advertisement? They are two separate locations. What will probably happen is that a lot of Bangkokians will turn up to watch the tennis and will go to directly to the Intercontinental looking for it there, thus creating chaos on the road, and others will do the U-turn and park their vehicles in the big car park opposite the hotel, only to find that they need to head back towards town to do another U-turn, then head back out towards Centennial Park.

By the way most of the locals don't even know where Centennial Park is.

The park is owned by Intercon and the event is put on by them (well, they're title sponsors, at least).

Azarenka beats top-ranked Serena in exhibition match
Victoria Azarenka beat top-ranked Serena Williams in straight sets Saturday in an exhibition match between the world's top two women's players.

The second-ranked Azarenka defeated Williams 7-5, 6-3 in front of about 3,000 fans at the Hua Hin World Tennis Invitation in a match both players used as a warm-up ahead of the Australian Open.

Azarenka broke for a 6-5 lead in the first set and broke twice in the second for her second victory at the exhibition event after 2011.

Williams beat Azarenka in the U.S. Open final this year.

The American said the match was ''a good warm-up before Australia. Victoria is a strong player. It's always fun to play someone like her.''
