When the morning breaks, a small fishing boat gradually approaches the shore in Pran Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan. Three fishermen alight from the wooden boat and one of them inserts the anchor in the sand. With them is one basket full of squid.
"It is the catch from last night," says the wife of fisherman Nid, who is waiting on the shore. "We normally get triple the amount, but nothing is certain when we sail out to sea," she adds.
Fishing is the main source of income for people living along the coast and at the mouth of the Pran Buri river. At any given time during the day or night, there are big and small boats sailing in and out to sea.
Sandwiched between the famous Hua Hin beach and the well-known Sam Roi Yot National Park, Pran Buri's sandy beach has few tourists, but lots of local activities waiting to be explored.
An early morning visit may start with catching ghost crabs, doing yoga or jogging along the beach, which stretches for miles.
A nice sandbar can be found at Khao Kaloak, where the Thao Kosa Forest Park is located. You can also rent a bicycle to tour the area.
Pran Buri also has a fishing port where hundreds of boats dock each morning to unload their catch, which usually includes squid.
Small factories making dried squid are located around the mouth of the Pran Buri River. Rows of squid hung horizontally to dry in hot sun is a common sight outside these factories.

Yes, you smell the dried squid all over the place. But if you have accustomed to the smell you can eat very good seafood at several places.

Barry, can you see your place from that photo of the river, or is it further up? Pete

Hi Pete
Our place is just over 1 km downstream from the Tabtim Thong shrine.
To save confusion, they are actually talking about Paknampran in this article rather than the town of Pranburi, and we do the boat tours on the river here too, but on a silent, odour-less electric boat that lets you really appreciate the wildlife.
