Strange Fish at Praknampran

Post by Lung Per »

I took the Mrs and junior on a little outing to the Praknampran Mangrove in the Praknampran Forest Park. Absolutlely worth the trip if you appreciate the mangrove (as found also in the Key Largo area in Florida), and if you have the inclination and patience to study crabs and other small creatures in the swamp. We followed this by a boat trip from the beach and around the tip going inside the rivermouth at Paknampran. Lots of fishing boats to look at. But more interesting, we saw on the muddy shores some strange fish that I never saw before. They had little feet and could produce a considerable speed. Actually, I saw one of them outrun a crab. Ugly buggers they are - look below.
I would like to know more about these creatures. Anyone know their name - English or Latin?

I'm a lone male sat amongst loads of Thai ladies at the moment. I've shown them the photo, and they were unanimous in their response that it was a salt water mudfish.

Yes, they are mud skippers and they're very common around here.
They grow to well over 30 cm long and used to be a delicacy among the fishing families here, though their apetite for such creatures appears to have waned somewhat according to my staff ............
