My small video player box is going home after some years, I need a replacement as I don't want a laptop sat next to my tv all the time.
I don't have a smart TV, I plug a small external USB hard drive into the media box which plugs into my amplifier (HDMI input).
I want a media box that will play the latest version video avi/mp4/mpeg/MKV formatted files at up to 1080p resolution. I think it's called a Digital Media Player. I'm not looking for a slingbox or other streaming device, or even a network storage device, just something small and neat that will plug into my amp and play video files I already have on my storage.
Like this (but cheaper and not discontinued!). https://www.digitalconnection.com/produ ... m6500a.asp

When I was living in China, I had a (Western Digital) "WDTV Live" unit which I used much as you intend (although there is also a streaming function). From memory, the unit cost me around US$120. Very neat (approx. 150 mm x 150 mm x 50 mm), remote control & played 99% of the files I had - up to 1080 resolution. I'd be fairly confident you could get one of these units in Bangkok if not in HH.
