Formula One world in shock over death of Ferrari icon

https://au.sports.yahoo.com/formula-one ... 52259.html

Ferrari paid tribute to “courageous leader” Sergio Marchionne after the former Scuderia chief executive and chairman died at the age of 66.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced on Saturday that Marchionne had stepped down from his roles due to complications after recent shoulder surgery.
Tributes poured in after Marchionne’s sudden passing was confirmed on Wednesday.

Formula One team Ferrari tweeted: “All of us at Ferrari feel privileged to have worked alongside a courageous leader like Sergio Marchionne, a man of enormous humanity and intelligence.
“In this moment of sadness, we join with his family in remembering him with immense affection.”

FIA president Jean Todt also paid tribute to Marchionne.
“It is with great sadness that I learned that Sergio Marchionne tragically and unexpectedly passed away.” he said in a statement.
“Sergio achieved a colossal amount for the automotive industry and motor sport worldwide. He dedicated himself fully to turn around the Fiat-Chrysler group and put all his energy to bring Ferrari back to the top.
“He was an endearing, upstanding and brave man, an unconventional and visionary leader.

“He was an eminent member of the FIA F1 Strategy Group and of the FIA High-Level Panel for Road Safety. His death is a considerable loss. On behalf of the entire FIA community, all my thoughts go out to his family, his friends and his Ferrari and Fiat-Chrysler group teams.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said: “This is a sad day for all of us in @F1. We have a lost a huge supporter of our sport, a fierce competitor, an ally and a friend.
“Our heartfelt sympathies are with Sergio’s family and all at @scuderiaferrari at this difficult time.”

Red Bull tweeted: “Condolences to the family and friends of Sergio Marchionne. A great competitor on and off track @scuderiaferrari. Riposi in pace.”

Well done, Pete. That was a pretty impressive score. :thumb:

Parahandy is currently using the only wooden spoon we have left in the house to make a curry tonight. I get a tinge of delight when I beat him with my slightly random selections, but I'm doing the traditional slip slide towards the bottom of the league table. :(

https://redbullracing.redbull.com/artic ... leave-team

Daniel Ricciardo has advised us that he is to leave the Team at the end of the 2018 season.

Having joined the Red Bull family in 2008 as a member of the Red Bull Junior Team, with whom he won numerous junior titles, Daniel made his F1 debut in 2011 at the British Grand Prix. After two seasons with Scuderia Toro Rosso, Daniel joined us in 2014 and to date has brought the team seven victories, 29 podium finishes, two pole positions and 904 championship points.

Commenting on Daniel’s decision, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner said: “We fully respect Daniel’s decision to leave Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and we wish him all the best in his future. We would like to thank him for his dedication and the role he has played since joining the Team in 2014, the highlights of course being the seven wins and the 29 podiums he has achieved so far with us.

“We will now continue to evaluate the numerous options available to us before deciding on which driver partners Max Verstappen for the 2019 season. In the meantime, there are still nine races left in 2018 and we are fully focused on maximising every opportunity for Max and Daniel for the remainder of the season.”

The world of Formula One has been left shocked by Daniel Ricciardo’s Renault bombshell after the Aussie announced he was jumping ship from Red Bull next season.

Ricciardo’s future has been the subject of intense speculation, with the Aussie arguably the last big name to decide which team he would be driving for in 2019.
The 29-year-old has now confirmed he’s making the stunning move to Renault and the decision has rocked motor racing fans.

It has been more than a decade since Renault last won the Formula One drivers’ title with Fernando Alonso in 2006, and the team who supply engines to Red Bull have not won a race since fully rejoining Formula One three years ago.

Ricciardo, 29, is fifth in the 2018 drivers’ standings and has won in China and Monaco this season, two of his seven Grand Prix victories.
“It was probably one of the most difficult decisions to take in my career so far,” Ricciardo told the Renault website. “But I thought that it was time for me to take on a fresh and new challenge.”

Renault managing director Cyril Abiteboul said the signing of the gifted extrovert underlined their ambitions.
“Daniel’s signing underscores our determination to accelerate our progress towards the forefront of the sport,” he said.
“Daniel’s undoubted talent and charisma are a huge bonus and statement for the team. We will have to repay his faith in us by delivering the best car possible.”
Team president Jerome Stoll added: “Renault decided to come back to Formula One to fight for world championships.”

Red Bull announced first that Ricciardo had decided to quit the team, before Renault swiftly confirmed his signing.
Currently, Renault’s best-placed driver is Nico Hulkenberg in seventh in the standings, while 23-year-old Spaniard Carlos Sainz is 11th.

Ricciardo’s switch to a team outside the big three of Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari represents a gamble.

While Renault are one place behind Red Bull in the constructors’ standings, they only have 82 points while third-placed Red Bull sit on 223.

“I realise that there is a lot ahead in order to allow Renault to reach their target of competing at the highest level,” he added.
“But I have been impressed by their progression in only two years, and I know that each time Renault has been in the sport they eventually won. I hope to be able to help them in this journey and contribute on and off track.”

– Dominos tumbling –
While the leading team, Mercedes, announced before the German Grand Prix on July 22 that they had locked their two drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, to contract extensions, Ricciardo’s switch could start dominos tumbling elsewhere in the paddock.

The promising Sainz, who like Ricciardo is a product of Red Bull’s driver development programme, is one driver already looking for a seat.

Red Bull meanwhile need to find a replacement for Ricciardo.

“We will now continue to evaluate the numerous options available to us before deciding on which driver partners Max Verstappen for the 2019 season,” team principal Christian Horner told the Red Bull website.
