Fifty years ago, Ford ended Ferrari's domination at Le Mans with a 1-2-3 finish in the top class. A GT40 won the next three years. In 1964, Ford first beat Ferrari in a lower class with the Shelby Cobra. The victories were especially sweet for Henry Ford II. He'd started the Le Mans program to get back at Ferrari for backing out of a deal for Ford to buy Ferrari and then operate it jointly.
Last year Ford debuted their new supercar, also named the GT40. What better way to generate some publicity then run a version at Le Mans? Fifty years to the day after their 1-2-3 sweep, they finished 1-3-4 in one of the lower classes, beating Ferrari. U!S!A! U!S!A! U!S!A!
