Hello to all.

Post by probe »

Hello all,

Been reading the forum for the last couple of hours. Seems like there's much good information here. Hope to learn more.

About me: I'm a divorced caucasian male in my mid 50's living in the US. Took an early retirement a couple of years ago and don't miss the daily grind at all. I'm making my first trip to Thailand soon and am researching places to visit. The trip will be part holiday, part research as I'm considering staying long term if I like what I find.

I have no desire to stay in Bangkok as I'm not a big city kind of guy. I've researched some of the Issan towns but love being around a beach. Pattaya and Phuket sound a bit over the top to me for a long term stay.

Found this site doing a Google search and this area seems to have a number of the things I'm looking for: beach, some nightlife, not overly tourist oriented. Please advise if I'm wrong or missing something terribly important.

I'll probably have some questions after doing more reading. Please bear with me. Some topics I've read weren't completely current.

Thanks.

Hello Probe and welcome aboard.

Although I am not yet resident in Hua Hin, I have been there a couple of times and I think that you will find what you are looking for in a place to stay long term, nice beaches, as much night life as you want and as you have said not to overly tourist orientated.

We move out to lovely Hua Hin, in twelve days time, to start our new life. I have also taken early retirement and we cannot wait to get there.

I spent twenty four years in the army and I have seen most of the world, but we have chosen Hua Hin, as a place to retire to, so that should tell you what we think of Hua Hin.

Hi probe and welcome to Hua Hin whenever that would be.
I have three very nice countrymen of yours living close by in rented houses.
They were at first planning to stay here 6 months, but now they want to get rid of all their belongings in the States and settle down here.
Good luck to you and enjoy your vacation and retirement.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

Your not wrong

You will only miss something terribly important if you don't come out. For me less than 30 days and counting. :thumb:

Thanks for the replies gentlemen.

I've done a lot more reading and I like what I've seen so far. The forum seems very friendly as well. Much different from some other forums I've visited recently.

Right now I'm planning on being in-country in October and November. I'll probably go to Pattaya for 2 weeks just to confirm my thoughts about it, then move on from there.

As I mentioned above I was thinking about Issan but the lure of the beach is very strong. I'll have to work out transportation from Pattaya to Hua Hin, but there's some information here on that subject. Just have to read some more.

For a temporary base I'm looking at Noodles. Since they're a sponsor and I'm not looking for luxury accomodations it seems OK. Any thoughts anyone?

Probe, I was there about 5 weeks ago and stayed at the Little Danish Guest House (also a HHAD sponser).
It is located at the far end of the town, just past the Hilton (opposite all if the fishing pier resteraunts).

Front rooms of the building all have sea views. Rooms have double/twin beds, A/C, TV, Ensuite, built in robes and cupboards plus a fridge (mini bar size).

If you are interested, just email the owner (Gert) at little.denmark@hotmail.com and he will organise things for you.
Also I had a cooked breakfast included in the price of the room.

Thanks for the tip Chelsea.

I realize this isn't the west and things move a little more slowly there, but how long does it usually take these places to respond?

Normally around a day or so, If I am not in a hurry, I normally send a few emails out, and then look at them in about a week, after all of them have come back. Those who have not replied by then, I just forget about and then just work with the rest.

What I would suggest as a good idea (rather than try and book a whole trip in advance), is if you are going to be in HH for any length of time, book a good hotel for about a week, grab a local map and some addresses from the HHAD website and then go and find a place to stay for the rest of your trip.

It is a lot easier to negotiate a good rate in the hotel face to face, you can see exactly what you are getting to stay in and what you are getting for your money. You will probably find that you will save a lot of money by doing it that way.
There is a list of avaulable hotels on the HHAD site at this address

Hope this has been some help for you.
