I have been fortunate enough not to have many dealings with the hospitals here so don't have the first hand experience. That report is pretty shocking though regardless.
The local hospitals are fine for very minor things but anything serious should be treated in Phetburi or Bangkok where the facilities and staff are far better.

Thanks Guys. I may be moving to Hua Hin in a few months and info appreciated. A bit more about me. Currently living in Hawaii. Have lived about 10 years out of the last 35 in Thailand, going back to the VN War days. Most recently, in Jomtien..up the road from Pattaya and don't really want to settle there again...looking for alternatives, not that far from BKK. Love Nong Khai but remote and maybe a bit too laid back. I've owned and operated an engineering company (maritime containers) in Asia for the past 11 years. Nowadays...primary activity is in mainland China. Cheers to all and hope to meet some of you down the road. Thanks patience with additional Hua Hin questions I may send in. Pete

A friend of mine obviously is accident prone and consequently has visited San Paulo several times.
It seems to be just the luck of the draw how you fare in SP. If you are lucky you'll get good
care with competent doctors. This has happened to my friend who has had one major surgery
in SP as well and is currently recovering from it. The operation was performed by the
doctors from various other hospitals best of whom was the Chief Orthopedic Surgeon
from Pranburi Military Hospital. Two weeks in a private room with one major operation cost him 122 000 baht.
He once visited First Aid with a servere cut to his head and a lot of road rash. He was quickly and
expertly attended by the young, slim chinese-looking doctor who treaed him well and afted a night
in hospital released him so as not to incur more costs.
Once he was shoved in a private room to wait for the doctor. SP tried to rip off him the cost of the room
(1500 baht) even if he stayed there for 15 - 20 minutes only. After much screaming and hollering SP dropped the charge.
An yesterday my friend bought new cruthces from SP. They being the only supplier in town
charged him 1 500 Baht for the pair. Tesco-Lotus pharmacy sells exactly same pair for 550 baht.
Hua Hin has a pair of good clinics for any immediate small stuff. Bigger stuff your'e better off in Petchaburi or in Bkk.

A useful perspective ! Like anything, if you know the ropes, it's a breeze, so this information is very useful should one ever be unfortunate enough to require treatment.

Here’s my 2 baht worth. Having had family spend time in seven different hospitals in Thailand for reasons as varied as neurosurgery (3times) to flu and food poisoning, here my take the situation in Hua Hin. My recommendation is to go to Hua Hin International Poly-Clinic for any emergencies. They are owned by Petcharat Hospital in Petchburi. If the clinic can’t handle the problem, they will get you to Petcharat. Petcharat has the facilities and staff to handle most things. If it’s not an emergency but serious, get to a Bangkok hospital. Bumrungrad is the best I’ve been to.
Unless you want to be coffin filler, stay away from San Paulo. Twice they treaded my wife for head injuries. Both times they misdiagnose serious brain injuries. When my boy had a bike accident, I had to ask them to check for concussion. After my wife had brain surgery we thought they could handle changing the dressing on a daily basis. The wound became infected and they never indicated to us there was a problem. I don’t blame them for the infection, but they should have picked up on it not healing properly. It’s night and day comparing the nurse’s competency at SP versus the International Clinic or Petcharat (same nurses).
I can’t say this enough – if you have a head injury, SP is at best a waste of time and sometimes down right dangerous. They do not have a CAT scan unit so diagnoses is by trail and error.
I also had a bad experience at Pranburi Army. They just seem to warehouse patients in large wards and hope they get better. You better have friend or family member stay with 24/7 because the nurse have way too many patients and too few of them. Hua Hin has somewhat the same problem, but seemed better staffed to me.
